    AbstractGraphene is known as an atomically thin, transparent, highly electrically and thermally conductive, light-weight, and the strongest 2D material. We investigate disruptive application of graphene as a target of laser-driven ion acceleration. We develop large-area suspended graphene (LSG) and by transferring graphene layer by layer we control the thickness with precision down to a single atomic layer. Direct irradiations of the LSG targets generate MeV protons and carbons from sub-relativistic to relativistic laser intensities from low contrast to high contrast conditions without plasma mirror, evidently showing the durability of graphene.

    Thermal neutron (similar to 25 meV) beam is a powerful tool for investigating the structure and properties of materials used in science and technology. A laser-driven neutron source generating 10(10) neutrons within 1 ns duration is utilized to a single shot radiography with a dual beam of thermal neutrons and X-rays. As a proof of principle, we show the non-destructive inspection of hazardous substances (Cadmium) contained in a typical battery, when the cadmium anode thickness is evaluated from the transmittance of thermal neutrons. The fact that the neutron inspection above is performed with a single laser shot, i.e. with a single bunch of neutrons leads to a safer neutron source that is optically controlled on/off, and provides a novel tool for science and engineering.

    A new diagnosis method for the discriminative detection of laser-accelerated multi-MeV carbon ions from background oxygen ions utilizing solid-state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) is proposed. The idea is to combine two kinds of SSNTDs having different track registration sensitivities: Bisphenol A polycarbonate detects carbon and the heavier ions, and polyethylene terephthalate detects oxygen and the heavier ions. The method is calibrated with mono-energetic carbon and oxygen ion beams from the heavy ion accelerator. Based on the calibration data, the method is applied to identify carbon ions accelerated from multilayered graphene targets irradiated by a high-power laser, where the generation of high-energy high-purity carbon ions is expected. It is found that 93 +/- 1% of the accelerated heavy ions with energies larger than 14 MeV are carbons. The results thus obtained support that carbon-rich heavy ion acceleration is achieved.

    Modified structure along latent tracks and track formation process have been investigated in poly (allyl diglycol carbonate), PADC, which is well recognized as a sensitive etched track detector. This knowledge is essential to develop novel detectors with improved track registration property. The track structures of protons and heavy ions (He, C, Ne, Ar, Fe, Kr and Xe) have been examined by means of FT-IR spectrometry, covering the stopping power region between 1.2 to 12,000 eV/nm. Through a set of experiments on low-LET radiations-such as gamma ray-, multi-step damage process by electron hits was confirmed in the radiation-sensitive parts of the PADC repeat-unit. From this result, we unveiled for the first-time the layered structure in tracks, in relation with the number of secondary electrons. We also proved that the etch pit was formed when at least two repeat-units were destroyed along the track radial direction. To evaluate the number of secondary electrons around the tracks, a series of numerical simulations were performed with Geant4-DNA. Therefore, we are proposing new physical criterions to describe the detection thresholds. Furthermore, we propose a present issue of the definition of detection threshold for semi-relativistic C ions. Additionally, as a possible chemical criterion, formation density of hydroxyl group is suggested to express the response of PADC.

    © 2020 A combination of CR-39 track detectors and a stepwise energy filter is a simple method to measure the energy spectrum of laser-accelerated protons. The number of etch pits in each area of the CR-39 detector is expected to represent the energy spectrum because the different thicknesses of the filters result in different areas into which the energy reaches in CR-39. However, the higher energy regions may overlap depending on the sensitivity of CR-39. To avoid overlapping, i.e., overestimation of the number of etch pits for each energy region, a correction method for the energy spectrum from the number of etch pits was developed. Based on the calculation results of the reaching energy values and incident energy ranges for CR-39, etch pits are selected that should be counted in each area. CR-39 with stepwise energy filters provides a corrected energy spectrum of laser-accelerated protons by applying the developed method.

    © 2019 Elsevier Ltd It has been confirmed that the density of carbonate ester in poly(allyl diglycol carbonate) (PADC), which is a well-known polymeric nuclear track detector CR-39, begins decreasing above a critical dose of about 60 kGy during exposures to Co-60 gamma rays and Ultra Soft X-rays (USX: Kα (Al) with energy 1.49 keV). After exposure to Co-60 gamma rays at 77 K and room temperature (RT), a significant difference in Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectra has been observed at both sides of a critical dose of 60 kGy, where is a threshold for the degradation of carbonate ester in PADC. Namely, the types of free radicals in PADC are different from each other below and above this critical dose. Changes in FT-IR spectra of carbonate ester in PADC above critical doses for gamma ray and USX exposures have also been observed, while that of ether decreases linearly with increasing absorbed dose. These results are well concordant with previous results obtained with 28 MeV electron beams. They also indicate that at least two hits of electrons are needed to destroy the carbonate ester in PADC. The layered structure of ion tracks in PADC can be explained thanks to these experimental results. Also, some clues for the identification of created radicals have been obtained from the results using both ESR and IR.

    The solid state nuclear track detector CR-39 is themost reliable ion detector used in laser-driven ion acceleration experiments. This is because CR-39 detectors can measure from one ion without X-ray and electron noise generated by the interaction between the intense laser pulse and the target matter. In addition, the incident energy and the spatial distributions of the laser-accelerated ions are also revealed by the careful analysis of the etch pits in CR-39 detectors. The present paper comments on CR-39 detectors based on previous studies with a focus on an analysis technique of the etch pits to obtain the incident energy of the laser-accelerated ions.

We aim to determine the detection threshold of Kapton as an Etched Track Detector irradiated with 345 MeV/u U ion, as well as other several heavy ions of Al, Si, Ar, Kr and Xe. The heavier ions are found to have higher detection threshold in the stopping power. At the same stopping power, the track registration sensitivity decreases with increasing the nuclear charge of ions. U ion has the lowest sensitivity as S = 0.04 at the detection threshold of 3400 keV/μm. We have updated the conventional radial dose distribution theory using a relatively new experimentally supported formula for the effective charge up to U ion. The local doses at a track radius of 0.8 nm, which is half of the length of a repeat unit of Kapton, is useful to understand the relation between the sensitivity of heavy ions and the stopping power at each detection threshold.

    An experiment on ion acceleration in near-critical density plasma is conducted using a high-intensity 1053 nm linearly polarized laser pulse with a laser intensity of 3.5 x 10(18)W/cm(2). In this experiment a thin 0.7 mu m thick CH foil is irradiated with a low-intensity, nanosecond pulse to create a near-critical density plasma. Then the high-intensity pulse is focused on the target at different time delays in order to verify what density profile is optimal for collisionless shock generation. Ion acceleration and electron spectra are observed by Radio Chromic Film and magnetic electron spectrometer. Proton dominant acceleration is confirmed at some time delays by CR-39. It is suggested that the accelerated ions are produced by Collisionless Electrostatic Shock comparing the experimental results with numerical/computational results.

  • Development of Micron-Scale Hydrogen Cluster Generation System and High-Repetitive Generation of Multi-MeV, Pure Proton Beams

    レーザー駆動イオン加速技術において,ミクロンサイズの水素クラスターのクーロン爆発を利用して,高繰 り返しで,multi-MeV の純陽子線を発生させる方法を提案した.本研究において,クライオスタットで冷却した 高圧水素ガスをパルスバルブに接続した円錐ノズルを介して真空中に噴射することによりミクロンサイズの水素 クラスターターゲットを発生させる装置を開発した.水素クラスターのサイズ分布は,散乱光の角度分布から Mie 散乱理論に基づき,Tikhonov 正則化法を利用して数学的に見積もった.25 K,6 MPa の状態の水素を噴射し た場合,クラスターの最大サイズは 2.15±0.1 μm であると見積もられた.その上で,J-KAREN-P 施設において水 素クラスターをターゲットとした 0.1 Hz 高繰り返し陽子加速の実証実験を行った.トムソンパラボラスペクトロ メーターを用いたエネルギー測定では,最大 7 MeV の純陽子線を観測した.高出力レーザーパルスとミクロンサ イズ水素クラスターの相互作用過程に関する三次元 Particle-in-Cell(PIC)シミュレーションにおいては,レー ザー伝搬方向に加速される 300 MeV におよぶ高指向性の準単色陽子発生が予測され,本手法は,将来的に高繰り 返しの高エネルギー高純度陽子源の有力候補になる可能性を秘めている.

    © 2019 Nuclear emulsions are applied to identify multi-MeV protons accelerated by an intense PW-class laser. Although nuclear emulsions, which record the three-dimensional trajectories of charged particles, feature high sensitivity and a sub-micron spatial resolution, they have never been used for the detection of laser-accelerated ions. This is because intense laser-matter interactions generate not only ions but also copious electrons, including secondary electrons induced by X-rays, which are recorded as background noise in a nuclear emulsion. Therefore, it is not a trivial task to identify ion tracks in a nuclear emulsion exposed to such extreme mixed radiation fields. Here, for the first time, we have succeeded in identifying the signals from laser-accelerated protons in nuclear emulsions by suppressing the background noise signals through the use of desensitized development conditions, i.e., a developer solution with a pH of 7.3 and a development time of 25 min. The energy spectrum obtained from a stack of nuclear emulsion films shows good agreement with that obtained from a stack of films of the conventional solid-state nuclear track detector material CR-39, which is sensitive only to ions. An additional benchmark experiment with 100-MeV protons from a conventional accelerator apparatus confirms that nuclear emulsions have the potential to measure 100-MeV-class laser-accelerated protons.

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd We aim to elucidate the chemical damage structure in poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), PADC, exposed to UV photons with a wavelength of 222 nm using FT-IR spectrometric method. The number density of carbonyl (C˭O) in PADC, which composes carbonate ester, is hardly affected by the UV photons below the critical fluence of 3.0 × 10 19 photons/cm 2 . The number density of carbonyl decreases only above the critical fluence, while those of ether and C-O-C in carbonate ester are monotonically cleaved. These findings corroborate the previous result using 28 MeV electron beams, in which the carbonate ester is lost only above the critical fluence of 1.6 × 10 15 electrons/cm 2 , where the overlapping of electron tracks becomes significant. We extend the conventional track overlapping model to clarify the spatial distribution of point-like defects after the UV exposure. The discrete damage is seen at the critical condition, based on the extended track overlapping model.

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd The detection threshold of poly(allyl dyglycol carbonate), PADC, for C ions is determined as 55 eV/nm in stopping power, which is significantly higher than that for proton and He ions. The stopping power is not a universal parameter for expressing the detection threshold of PADC. A new physical parameter of Radial Electron Fluence around Ion Tracks, REFIT, is proposed to describe the detection threshold of PADC. It is defined as the number density of electrons passing through the surface of a cylinder of a certain radius that is co-axial with the trajectory. Furthermore, preliminary calculations are presently being performed using the Monte Carlo simulation code of Geant4-DNA. The values of the REFIT at the detection thresholds for each ion are of the same order. Several issues affecting implementation of the REFIT paramter are discussed. These include the effects of impact parameter relating to the initial locations of secondary electrons, the effects of electron attachment below the cut off energy of 7.4 eV and the necessity of a more physically realistic medium than water for Monte Carlo simultaions.

    © 2018 Elsevier Ltd G values of the losses of typical functional groups in PET films along boron ion tracks have been determined using FT-IR spectrometry. G value for the loss of aromatic-ring clearly increases above 270 eV/nm. Those of ester and ethylene increase around the slightly lower stopping power of 250 eV/nm. The detection thresholds are defined by determining the original points from which the evolution of etch pit starts along the latent track, when the chemical etching was progressing starting from the front surface of each incident ion trajectory. The thresholds for B, C, N, O, Ar and Kr ions have been determined for other kind of PET sheets. Values of the sensitivity at the thresholds are fairly higher at heavy ions with smaller atomic number.

As a new laser-driven ion acceleration technique, we proposed a way to produce impurity-free, highly reproducible, and robust proton beams exceeding 100 MeV using a Coulomb explosion of micron-size hydrogen clusters. In this study, micron-size hydrogen clusters were generated by expanding the cooled high-pressure hydrogen gas into a vacuum via a conical nozzle connected to a solenoid valve cooled by a mechanical cryostat. The size distributions of the hydrogen clusters were evaluated by measuring the angular distribution of laser light scattered from the clusters. The data were analyzed mathematically based on the Mie scattering theory combined with the Tikhonov regularization method. The maximum size of the hydrogen cluster at 25 K and 6 MPa in the stagnation state was recognized to be 2.15 0.10 μm. The mean cluster size decreased with increasing temperature, and was found to be much larger than that given by Hagena's formula. This discrepancy suggests that the micron-size hydrogen clusters were formed by the atomization (spallation) of the liquid or supercritical fluid phase of hydrogen. In addition, the density profiles of the gas phase were evaluated for 25 to 80 K at 6 MPa using a Nomarski interferometer. Based on the measurement results and the equation of state for hydrogen, the cluster mass fraction was obtained. 3D particles-in-cell (PIC) simulations concerning the interaction processes of micron-size hydrogen clusters with high power laser pulses predicted the generation of protons exceeding 100 MeV and accelerating in a laser propagation direction via an anisotropic Coulomb explosion mechanism, thus demonstrating a future candidate in laser-driven proton sources for upcoming multi-petawatt lasers.

    In the present report, we discussed our recent results concerning the investigations of high energy density matter. By using of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopic measurements and kinetic simulations, we demonstrate that the energy of femtosecond laser pulses is efficiently converted to X-ray radiation and produces exotic states in solid density plasma regions. It is shown that exotic hollow multicharged ions states can be obtained and studied not only by ultra-intense X-ray radiation of XFEL lasers, but also upon using optical laser technology. We have concluded that observable features of the hollow-ion spectra are sensitive to such plasma parameters as density, temperature, hot-electron fraction, and intensity of the X-ray pumping radiation and could be used for effective diagnostics of warm dense matter parameters.

    Hydrogen clusters with diameters of a few micrometer range, composed of 10(8-10) hydrogen molecules, have been produced for the first time in an expansion of supercooled, high-pressure hydrogen gas into a vacuum through a conical nozzle connected to a cryogenic pulsed solenoid valve. The size distribution of the clusters has been evaluated by measuring the angular distribution of laser light scattered from the clusters. The data were analyzed based on the Mie scattering theory combined with the Tikhonov regularization method including the instrumental functions, the validity of which was assessed by performing a calibration study using a reference target consisting of standard micro-particles with two different sizes. The size distribution of the clusters was found discrete peaked at 0.33 +/- 0 : 03, 0.65 +/- 0 : 05, 0.81 +/- 0.06, 1.40 +/- 0.06 and 2.00 +/- 0.13 mu m in diameter. The highly reproducible and impurity-free nature of the micron-size hydrogen clusters can be a promising target for laser-driven multi-MeV proton sources with the currently available high power lasers.     J-KAREN-P is a high-power laser facility aiming at the highest beam quality and irradiance for performing state-of-the art experiments at the frontier of modern science. Here we approached the physical limits of the beam quality: diffraction limit of the focal spot and bandwidth limit of the pulse shape, removing the chromatic aberration, angular chirp, wavefront and spectral phase distortions. We performed accurate measurements of the spot and peak fluence after an f/1.3 off-axis parabolic mirror under the full amplification at the power of 0.3 PW attenuated with ten high-quality wedges, resulting in the irradiance of similar to 10(22) W/cm(2) and the Strehl ratio of similar to 0.5.     PADC 薄膜に 28 MeV 電子線および軟 X 線を照射し、実効的なトラックサイズやG 値等の化学的損傷パラメータを評価した。エーテル基の相対吸光度はフルエンスの増加に伴って線形的に減少したが、カルボニル基およびメチン基のそれは 1.6 × 10^15electrons/cm^2 以上の領域でのみ減少した。照射後に新たな端点として生成するヒドロキシル基の生成率も同フルエンス以上の領域で減少することも確認した。同様の傾向が超軟 X 線照射時にも確認された。28 MeV 電子線照射時のエーテル基損失のG 値はガンマ線のそれとほぼ同程度であり、70 MeV のプロトンの半分程度であった。これはプロトンの飛跡に沿った損傷が元の構造に戻る再結合を抑制していることを示唆する結果であった。カルボニル基損失のG値は’“Single-hit zone” では 10

    A combination of a petawatt laser and nuclear physics techniques can crucially facilitate the measurement of exotic nuclei properties. With numerical simulations and laser-driven experiments we show prospects for the Laser-driven Exotic Nuclei extraction-acceleration method proposed in [M. Nishiuchi et al., Phys, Plasmas 22, 033107 (2015)]: a femtosecond petawatt laser, irradiating a target bombarded by an external ion beam, extracts from the target and accelerates to few GeV highly charged short-lived heavy exotic nuclei created in the target via nuclear reactions.

A series of FT-IR spectrometric studies has been performed to understand the latent track structure in poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), PADC, which were exposed to proton beams with energies of 20, 30 and 70 MeV. These energies are too high to register etchable tracks in PADC. Chemical damage parameters, such as damage density, effective track core radius and radiation chemical yields, for losses of ether bond, carbonate ester bond and CH groups in PADC are evaluated as a function of the stopping power, which were compared to the previous results for 5.7 MeV proton and heavy ions, between He and Xe. Graphs of the chemical damage parameters are given at the wide stopping powers ranging from 1 to 12,000 keV/μm. The decreasing behaviors of the ether and carbonate ester bonds are on the almost identical trends with those of the heavy ions. On the contrary to this, the reducing behavior of CH groups is similar to that of the gamma rays. Different dependence of the chemical damage parameters for the loss of CH groups is found on the stopping powers between the both sides of the detection threshold as an etched track detector.

    The diagnosis method, using a combination of a permanent magnet and CR-39 track detectors, has been developed to separately measure the energy spectrum of the laser-accelerated MeV/n-class high-Z ions and that of MeV protons. The main role of magnet is separating between high-Z ions and protons, not for the usual energy spectrometer, while ion energy was precisely determined from careful analysis of the etch pit shapes and the etch pit growth behaviors in the CR-39. The method was applied to laser-driven ion acceleration experiments using CO2 clusters embedded in a background H-2 gas. Ion energy spectra with uncertainty Delta E = 0.1 MeV n(-1) for protons and carbon/oxygen ions were simultaneously obtained separately. The maximum energies of carbon/oxygen ions and protons were determined as 1.1 +/- 0.1 MeV and 1.6 +/- 0.1 MeV n(-1), respectively. The sharp decrease around 1 MeV n(-1) observed in the energy spectrum of carbon/oxygen ions could be due to a trace of the ambipolar hydrodynamic expansion of CO2 clusters. Thanks to the combination of the magnet and the CR-39, the method is robust against electromagnetic pulse (EMP).

    The dependence of the energy of ions accelerated during the interaction of the laser pulse obliquely incident on the thin foil target on the laser polarisation is studied experimentally and theoretically. We found that the ion energy being maximal for the p-polarisation drastically decreases when the pulse becomes s-polarised. The experimentally found dependencies of the ion energy are explained by invoking anomalous electron heating, which results in high electrostatic potential formation at the target surface. The anomalous heating of electrons beyond the energy of quiver motion in the laser field is described within the framework of a theoretical model of a driven oscillator with a step-like nonlinearity. We have demonstrated that the electron anomalous heating can be realised in two regimes: nonlinear resonance and stochastic heating, depending on the extent of stochasticity.

    We demonstrate an insertable pulse cleaning module (IPCM) that is connected to a commercial CPA Ti:sapphire laser system and reduces the background of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE), when the output energy and repetition rate of the original laser system is completely preserved. The ASE temporal contrast is suppressed by three orders of magnitude on the benefit of double saturable absorbers involved in the module. Our method can reform old conventional lasers into high-contrast advanced systems.

Modified structure along ion tracks in poly(allyl diglycol carbonate), PADC, films exposed to protons and heavy ions, He, C, Ne, Ar, Fe, and Xe, in air has been examined by means of FT-IR spectroscopy, covering the stopping power ranging from 10 to 12,000 keV/μm. The damage density for the loss of CH groups and the amount of formed OH groups along each tracks are estimated and compared to the previous results on the ether and the carbonate ester bonds. The CH groups are lost in the center region of the track core with other functional groups and the OH groups are created as new end-points of the polymer network. We obtained the molar absorption coefficient for OH of water absorbed in PADC films as 9.7 × 103 M-1 cm-1. It has been assumed that the coefficient is applicable to the OH groups on the polymer. The amount of OH groups are almost equivalent to the damage density of the ether bonds.

    An inhomogeneous spatial distribution of laser accelerated carbon/oxygen ions produced via the hydrodynamic ambipolar expansion of CO2 clusters has been measured by using CR-39 detectors. An inhomogeneous etch pits spatial distribution has appeared on the etched CR-39 detector installed on the laser propagation direction, while homogeneous ones are appeared on those installed at 45 degrees and 90 degrees from the laser propagation direction. From the range of ions in CR-39 obtained by using the multi-step etching technique, the averaged energies of carbon/oxygen ions for all directions are determined as 0.78 +/- 0.09 MeV/n. The number of ions in the laser propagation direction is about 1.5 times larger than those in other directions. The inhomogeneous etch pits spatial distribution in the laser propagation direction could originate from an ion beam collimation and modulation by the effect of electromagnetic structures created in the laser plasma.     We report, for the first time, that the energy of femtosecond optical laser pulses, E, with relativistic intensities I > 10(21) W/cm(2) is efficiently converted to X-ray radiation, which is emitted by "hot" electron component in collision-less processes and heats the solid density plasma periphery. As shown by direct high-resolution spectroscopic measurements X-ray radiation from plasma periphery exhibits unusual non-linear growth similar to E4-5 of its power. The non-linear power growth occurs far earlier than the known regime when the radiation reaction dominates particle motion (RDR). Nevertheless, the radiation is shown to dominate the kinetics of the plasma periphery, changing in this regime (now labeled RDKR) the physical picture of the laser plasma interaction. Although in the experiments reported here we demonstrated by observation of KK hollow ions that X-ray intensities in the keV range exceeds -10(17) W/cm(2), there is no theoretical limit of the radiation power. Therefore, such powerful X-ray sources can produce and probe exotic material states with high densities and multiple inner-shell electron excitations even for higher Z elements. Femtosecond laser-produced plasmas may thus provide unique ultra-bright X-ray sources, for future studies of matter in extreme conditions, material science studies, and radiography of biological systems.

    Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated with a 200 TW femtosecond high-intensity laser irradiating a micron-thick Al foil with Fe impurity on the surface. An energetic low-emittance high-density beam of heavy ions with a large charge-to-mass ratio can be obtained, which is useful for many applications, such as a compact radio isotope source in combination with conventional technology.     A high-contrast high-intensity petawatt-class Ti:sapphire chirped-pulse amplification laser has been developed for research on high field science. A saturable absorber and a low-gain optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification preamplifier in the front-end have improved the temporal contrast in the system to similar to 2 x 10(12) on the subnanosecond time scale at the similar to 70 TW power level. In addition to the high-contrast broadband high-energy output from the final amplifier has been achieved with a flat-top spatial profile with a filling factor of similar to 70%. This is the result of pump beam spatial profile homogenization with diffractive optical elements. The system produces the uncompressed output pulse energy of 29 J, indicating the capability for reaching a peak power of similar to 600 TW. We discuss in detail the design, performance, and characterization of the laser including output power, pulse duration, and spatiotemporal beam quality. We also describe the on-going upgrade of the laser system and some applications for the laser in relativistic dominated laser-matter interactions.

    CO2 clusters formed in supersonic expansion of a mixed-gas of CO2/H2 or CO2/He through a three-staged conical nozzle have been verified by measuring the angular distribution of the light scattered from cluster target. The angular distribution is fitted by convolving a lognormal size distribution with the scattering coefficients calculated based on the Mie theory. The reliability of the size measurement is verified to be within an experimental error of 10 % using standard particles. The mean sizes of CO2 clusters at the target center for the cases of CO2/H2 and CO2/He gas mixtures are estimated to be 0.26 and 0.22 μm, respectively. For the CO2/H2 mixed-gas target, the variation of the mean cluster size inside the gas jet is constant within the experimental error. Furthermore, the cluster density is estimated to be 5.5 × 108 clusters/cm2 by measuring the attenuation of the laser beam intensity. In addition, total gas density profiles in radial direction are obtained via the Abel inversion from the phase shift of the light passing through the target by utilizing an interferometer. The variation of the cluster mass fraction along the radial direction of the target is almost constant, which is consistent with a Boldarev's model. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

    Experimental demonstration of multi-charged heavy ion acceleration from the interaction between the ultra-intense short pulse laser system and the metal target is presented. The laser pulse of < 10 J laser energy, 36 fs pulse width, and the contrast level of similar to 10(10) from 200 TW class Ti: sapphire J-KAREN laser system at JAEA is used in the experiment. Almost fully stripped Fe ions accelerated up to 0.9 GeV are demonstrated. This is achieved by the high intensity laser field of similar to 10(21)Wcm(-2) interacting with the solid density target. The demonstrated iron ions with high charge to mass ratio (Q/M) is difficult to be achieved by the conventional heavy ion source technique in the accelerators.

Experimental demonstration of multi-charged heavy ion acceleration from the interaction between the ultra-intense short pulse laser system and the metal target is presented. Al ions are accelerated up to 12 MeV/u (324 MeV total energy). To our knowledge, this is far the highest energy ever reported for the case of acceleration of the heavy ions produced by the <10 J laser energy of 200 TW class Ti:sapphire laser system. Adding to that, thanks to the extraordinary high intensity laser field of ∼1021 Wcm-2, the accelerated ions are almost fully stripped, having high charge to mass ratio (Q/M).

    High intensity laser-plasma interaction has attracted considerable interest for a number of years. The laser-plasma interaction is accompanied by generation of various charged particle beams, such as high-energy proton and ions with high charge to mass ratio (Q/M; same as multi-charged ions). Results of simultaneous novel measurements of electron-induced photonuclear neutrons (photoneutron), which are a diagnostic of the laser-plasma interaction, are proposed to use for optimization of the laser-plasma ion generation. The proposed method is demonstrated by the laser irradiation with the intensity of 1 x 10(21) W/cm(2) on the metal foil target. The photoneutrons are measured by using NE213 liquid scintillation detectors. Heavy-ion signal is registered with the CR-39 track detector simultaneously. The measured signals of the electron-induced photoneutrons are well reproduced by using the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System.     We demonstrate the performance of an efficient insertable pulse cleaning module (IPCM) that uses a saturable absorber (SA) pair with a compensating multi-pass amplifier. IPCM consists of a first SA, a grating compressor, a second SA, a stretcher and a compensating Ti: sapphire amplifier. It is implemented with a conventional chirped pulse amplification (CPA) Ti: sapphire laser system, resulting in a double CPA system architecture, and suppresses the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) level of the pulse pedestal by about three orders of magnitude while preserving the output pulse energy and repetition-rate of the overall laser system. The duration of recompressed cleaned pulses is comparable to that obtained without the cleaning module. The effectiveness of the cleaning module is confirmed in laser-driven proton acceleration experiments. At the 109 W/cm(2) pedestal level, the surface structure and electrical resistivity of an insulator target (100 nm silicon nitride) are preserved prior to the arrival of the intense ultrashort pulse.     A detailed mathematical model is presented for a submicronsized cluster formation in a binary gas mixture flowing through a three-staged conical nozzle. By measuring the angular distribution of light scattered from the clusters, the size of CO2 clusters, produced in a supersonic expansion of the mixture gas of CO2(30%)/H-2(70%) or CO2(10%)/He(90%), has been evaluated using the Mie scattering method. The mean sizes of CO2 clusters are estimated to be 0.28 +/- 0.03 mu m for CO2/H-2 and 0.26 +/- 0.04 mu m for CO2/He, respectively. In addition, total gas density profiles in radial direction of the gas jet, measuring the phase shift of the light passing through the target by utilizing an interferometer, are found to be agreed with the numerical modeling within a factor of two. The dryness (= monomer/(monomer + cluster) ratio) in the targets is found to support the numerical modeling. The apparatus developed to evaluate the cluster-gas targets proved that our mathematical model of cluster formation is reliable enough for the binary gas mixture. (C) 2013 Optical Society of America

    The size of CO2 clusters, produced in a supersonic expansion of a mixed-gas of CO2/He or CO2/H-2 through a three-staged conical nozzle designed based on the Boldarev's model, has been evaluated by measuring the angular distribution of light scattered from the clusters. The data are analyzed utilizing the Mie scattering theory, and the sizes of CO2 clusters are estimated as 0.22 mu m and 0.25 mu m for the cases of CO2/He and CO2/H-2 gas mixtures, respectively.     The track registration property in polyimide Kapton has been examined for heavy ions, including 2.3GeV Fe and 24 GeV Xe ions. Conventional track formation criteria fail to predict the thresholds of etch pit formation, while a chemical criterion stating that etchable tracks are formed when two adjacent diphenyl ethers are broken in the vicinity of the ion's trajectory should be more appropriate. Discriminative detections of ultra-heavy components in cosmic rays, such as Bi, Th, and U ions, are possible by measuring the recorded track length. © 2013 The Japan Society of Applied Physics.

    In order to understand the vacuum effects on the sensitivity of PADC detectors from the viewpoint of molecule structural modification along nuclear tracks, a series of FT-IR spectrometric studies has been made for PADC films exposed to He and C ions at energies below 6 MeV/n, as well as to gamma rays from an intense Co-60 source, under the both conditions of in air and in vacuum. The radiation chemical yields for the losses of ether and carbonate ester bonds are hardly affected by the environmental conditions in the cases of He and C ion irradiations. For gamma ray, the yields are about half in vacuum compared to those in air. The formation of OH groups is fairly suppressed in vacuum in all cases. Recombination of free radicals resulted in modified polymeric network formation would be enhanced in heavy ion irradiations rather than in that of gamma irradiations. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.     A new diagnosis method for high energy ions utilizing a single CR-39 detector mounted on plastic plates is demonstrated to identify the presence of the high energy component beyond the CR-39's detection threshold limit. On irradiation of the CR-39 detector unit with a 25 MeV per nucleon He ion beam from conventional rf-accelerators, a large number of etch pits having elliptical openings are observed on the rear surface of the CR-39. Detailed investigations reveal that these etch pits are created by heavy ions inelastically backscattered from the plastic plates. This ion detection method is applied to laser-driven ion acceleration experiments using cluster-gas targets, and ion signals with energies up to 50 MeV per nucleon are identified.     Chemical ester bond scission induced by incoming ions in polyethylene terephthalate (PET), bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC), polyallyl diglycol carbonate (PADC), have been systematically determined by FT-IR transmission measurements. The studied ions (H, He, C, Ne, I, Ar, Fe, Kr, Xe) have LET ranging from 10 to 10 000 keV μm-1. We discuss the opportunity to simulate the experimental chemical cross section obtained with an approach based on the dose deposited by the secondary electrons removed by the incoming ion.     Track registration properties in polyimide films, KAPTON, for heavy ions have been examined by means of FT-IR Spectrometry and the chemical etching in sodium hypochlorite solution. The effective track core size for the loss of C=O and C-N-C composing imide bonds, and diphenyl ethers of C-O-C have been evaluated under the irradiations by Ne, Fe and Xe ions at energies less than 6 MeV/n. On the other hand, the etching property of the polyimide films has been examined in the sodium hypochlorite solution at temperature of 55 degrees C. Before the etchings, the films were exposed to H, C, Ne, Fe and Xe ions, at incident energies below 6 MeV/n. The etch pits are found only on the films exposed to Fe and Xe ions, indicating significant difference on the etch pit size between them. This implies that the polyimide film has charge or energy resolution for these relatively heavy ions. The threshold level of the etchable track registration is inferred to be around 2500 keV/mu m. The effective track core radius at this stopping power for the loss of diphenyl ether is 1.6 nm, which is equivalent to the length between the adjacent diphenyl ether bonds in the polyimide chains. Breakings at two adjacent diphenyl ethers in radial direction of latent tracks may produce etchable tracks in KAPTON. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    A precise measurement has been made utilizing a stacked CR-39 detectors unit for laser-accelerated high intensity protons. The proton beams are derived from a thin polyimide target exposed to an high intense Ti:sapphire laser 8 J energy and 40 fs duration. The sample sets, stacked radiochromic film and CR-39 detectors covered with 13 mu m aluminum filter, are irradiated under vacuum condition. By analyzing the etch pits on the last layer of CR-39 which recorded etchable tracks, the energies of each proton in high-energy region are evaluated more precisely than in the past. The residual ranges for each particle in the last layer has been obtained from etch pit growth curves with multi-step etching technique. The maximum energy of proton is 14.39 +/- 0.05 MeV. This method allows us to measure the maximum energy of proton precisely, which can obtain high energy resolution with uncertainty Delta E = 0.1 MeV in the laser-driven particle acceleration experiment.     A single-shot-imaging thin scintillator film was developed for an online Thomson parabola (TP) spectrometer and the first analysis of laser accelerated ions, using the online TP spectrometer, was demonstrated at the JAEA-Kansai Advanced Relativistic Engineering Laser System (J-KAREN). An energy spectrum of ∼4.0 MeV protons is obtained using only this imaging film without the need of a microchannel plate that is typically utilized in online ion analyses. A general-purpose Monte Carlo particle and heavy ion-transport code system, which consists of various quantum dynamics models, was used for the prediction of the luminescent properties of the scintillator. The simulation can reasonably predict not only the ion trajectories detected by the spectrometer, but also luminescence properties. © 2013 American Institute of Physics.

    In laser-driven ion acceleration experiments applying cluster-gas targets, a significant amount of high energy electrons are produced. Such fast electrons can produce photo-neutrons via bremsstrahlung processes followed by (gamma,n) reactions. When the CR-39 is exposed to photoneutrons, it records etchable tracks of generated ions depending on their species and energy as background noises. To minimize the effect of photo-neutrons, the configuration of the CR-39 detector unit and beam dump for high energy electrons has been examined by Monte Carlo simulations. As a result, we have found the suitable configuration for CR-39 to detect only laser-accelerated ions with less contaminant by photo-neutrons in one laser shot.

    We demonstrate a new ion diagnosis method for high energy ions by utilizing a combination of a single CR-39 detector and plastic plates, which enables to detect high energy ions beyond the detection threshold limit of the CR-39. This detection method coupled with a magnetic spectrometer is applied to identify high energy ions of 50 MeV per nucleon in laser-driven ion acceleration experiments using cluster-gas targets.

    The sensitization effect of carbon dioxide treatments with 0.6 MPa on poly(allyl diglycol carbonate) (PADC) etched track detectors is confirmed for protons and He, C, and Fe ions, where the stopping powers range from 10 to 600 keV/μm. Based on the FT-IR study for the PADC films that were maintained at room temperature and at elevated temperatures, the diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide, is determined as D = 14,670exp(-9030/T(K)) cm2/s. The sensitivity is enhanced when carbon dioxide is released toward the chemical etching solution that passes through the detector surface. Segmented PADC polymer chains are washed away by the flow of carbon dioxide along the latent tracks in PADC, which results in a higher track etch rate. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    The radiation chemical yields for losses of ether and carbonate ester bonds in poly(allyl diglycol carbonate) (PADC) have been determined by means of Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry for He (2.3 and 20 MeV) ions, as well as C (1.10, 1.25, and 1.39 GeV) and Fe (20.8 and 22.8 GeV) ions. The radiation chemical yields are higher at lower stopping powers for each ion and greater with increasing charge at the same stopping powers. Secondary electrons with higher energy should play a significant role to increase the yields by producing damage at a relatively distant place from the ion trajectories.     Using a high-contrast (10(10):1) and high-intensity (10(21) W/cm(2)) laser pulse with the duration of 40 fs from an optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification/Ti:sapphire laser, a 40 MeV proton bunch is obtained, which is a record for laser pulse with energy less than 10 J. The efficiency for generation of protons with kinetic energy above 15 MeV is 0.1%.

    The damage structure of latent tracks in poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) has been examined by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) measurements. Results are compared with those from previous studies on bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC) and poly(allyl diglycol carbonate) (PADC). These polymers are exposed to protons and heavy ions (He, C, Ne, Si, Ar, Fe, Kr, and Xe) in air with energies less than 6 MeV/n, as well as gamma rays from an intense Co-60 source. Chemical damage parameters, namely, damage density, which is the number of losses of considered functional groups per unit length of tracks, radial size of the track core, in which the considered chemical groups are lost, and radiation chemical yields (G values) for each group are evaluated as a function of the stopping power. It has been confirmed that latent tracks will be etchable when the radial track core size is larger than the distance between two adjacent breaking points of polymer chains. The predominant breaking points are the C-O bonds in ether, ester, and carbonate ester bonds. (C) 2012 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

    A single CR-39 detector mounted on plastic plates is irradiated with a 100 MeV He ion beam. Although the beam energy is much greater than the detection threshold limit of the CR-39 detector, a large number of etch pits having elliptical openings are observed on the rear surface. Detailed investigations reveal that these etch pits are created by heavy ions inelastically backscattered from the plastic plates. This method allows a simple diagnosis of the ion beam profile and the presence of the high-energy component beyond the detection threshold limit of the CR-39 detector, especially in mixed-radiation fields such as laser-driven ion acceleration experiments.     A 7 MeV proton beam collimated to 16 mrad containing more than 10(6) particles is experimentally demonstrated by focusing a 2 J, 60 fs pulse of a Ti:sapphire laser onto targets of different materials and thicknesses placed in a millimeter scale conical holder. The electric potential induced on the target holder by laser-driven electrons accelerates and dynamically controls a portion of a divergent quasi-thermal proton beam originated from the target, producing a quasi-monoenergetic "pencil" beam.     A new diagnosis method has been developed utilizing back scattered particles for high energy intense ion beams. The CR-39 detector mounted on the uniform back-scatterer was irradiated with He-4(2+) ions with an energy 25 MeV/n, which is never recorded as etchable track in CR-39. We found that it is possible to diagnose by analyzing the etch pits on the rear surface of CR-39 that directly contacted on the back-scatterers. It turns out that most of etch pits in the rear surface are made by the backscattered particles by investigating the growth pattern of each etch pit with multi-step etching technique. This method allows simple diagnosis of the ion beam profile and intensity distribution in mixed radiation field such as laser-driven ion acceleration experiments.

    From the interaction between the high-contrast (similar to more than 10(10)) 130 TW Ti:sapphire laser pulse and Stainless Steel-2.5 um-thick tape target, proton beam with energies up to 23 MeV with the conversion efficiency of similar to 1% is obtained. After plasma mirror installation for contrast improvement, from the interaction between the 30 TW laser pulse and thin-foil target installed on the target holder with the hole whose shape is associated with the design of the well-known Wehnelt electrode of electron-gun, a 7 MeV intense proton beam is controlled dynamically and energy selected by the self-induced quasi-static electric field on the target holder. From the highly divergent beam having continuous spectrum, which are the typical features of the laser-driven proton beams from the interactions between the short-pulse laser and solid target, the spatial distribution of 7 MeV proton bunch is well manipulated to be focused to an small spots with an angular distribution of similar to 10 mrad. The number of protons included in the bunch is >10(6).

    The fast electron spectrum was measured for the interaction between the thin foil and the relativistic optical high field. There were two components in the electron spectrum. The higher temperature component was almost explained by the ponderomotive formula T-e[MeV] = 0.511(root 1+I-18 lambda(2)/1.37 - 1). The total electron spectrum including the lower temperature component was also explained by a simple model.

    Chemical modification along ion tracks in PADC films has been studied by means of FT-IR spectrometry, which was exposed to proton and heavy ions of He, C, Ne, Ar, Fe, Kr and Xe with energies around the Bragg peaks. This study covers a wide region of the stopping power ranging from 10 to 10,000 keV/mu m. Removal cross sections for the loss of ether and carbonate ester bonds are assessed for each ion, as a function of the stopping power. Chemical damage parameters like the damage density, the effective track core radius and the radiation chemical yields. G values (scissions/100 eV), for each bond are also derived. We have found anomalous dependence of these parameters on the stopping power. The G value for the loss of carbonate ester bond decreased from 20 for proton down to 5 for C and Ne ions, and then increased with atomic number of heavy ions up to 8 for Xe ion. Radial dose distribution for each ion has been also calculated. Results are discussed from the viewpoint of polymeric structure of PADC that consists of two parts with different radio-sensitivities.     This paper presents the experimental investigation of laser-driven proton acceleration using a table top Ti:Sapphire laser system interacting with the thin-foil targets during the course of medical application of the laser-driven proton beam. The proton beam with maximum energy of upto 14 MeV is generated in 60 TW mode. The number of protons at similar to 10 MeV is estimated to be over 10(5) proton/sr/MeV/shot with beam having half divergence angle of 5 degree. If 10 Hz operation is assumed 2 Gy dose is possible to irradiate during 10 min onto a similar to 1 mm tumor just under the skin. In constrast to the revious condition of our apparatus with which we demonstrated the DNA doubel-strand breaking by irradiating the laser-driven proton beam onto the human cancer cells (in-vitro test) the result reported here has significant meaning in the sense that pre-clinical in-vivo test can be started by irradiating the laser-driven proton beam onto the skin of the mouse, which is unavoidable step before the real radiation therapy.

    The fading of carbon dioxide treatment on PADC detectors after alpha-particle irradiations has been confirmed to relate to the diffusion loss of carbon dioxide. Diffusion coefficient of carbon dioxide in the film is found to be D = 1.1 x 10(-9) cm(2)/s at room temperature. The effect of the post-irradiation treatment has strong relation with the dissolving process of carbon dioxide into the etching solution through the renewing surface of the detector during etching. Absorbed carbon dioxide can modify the network structure of PADC with higher permeability for etching solution. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Particle counting analysis (PCA) with a multi-stage scintillation detector shows a new perspective on angularly resolved spectral characterization of GeV-scale, multi-species ion beams produced by high-power lasers. The diagnosis provides a mass-dependent ion energy spectrum based on time-of-flight and pulse-height analysis of single particle events detected through repetitive experiments. With a novel arrangement of multiple scintillators with different ions stopping powers, PCA offers potential advantages over commonly used diagnostic instruments (CR-39, radiochromic films, Thomson parabola, etc .) in terms of coverage solid angle, detection efficiency for GeV-ions, and real-time analysis during the experiment. The basic detector unit was tested using 230-MeV proton beam from a synchrotron facility, where we demonstrated its potential ability to discriminate major ion species accelerated in laser–plasma experiments (i.e., protons, deuterons, carbon, and oxygen ions) with excellent energy and mass resolution. The proposed diagnostic concept would be essential for a better understanding of laser-driven particle acceleration, which paves the way toward all-optical compact accelerators for a range of applications.

    We report recent progress on the J-KAREN laser upgrade to realize 10 22 W/cm(2) intensity at 0.1 Hz. Our current high-spatiotemporal-quality broadband pulses of over 20 J will be further amplified in the final amplifier.

    The 66th JSAP Spring Meeting, 2019, Mar. 2019, Japanese, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ookayama Campus, 固体飛跡検出器の一つであるビスフェノール A ポリカーボネート(以下 PC)に関して、 これまでに重イオンやガンマ線など様々な放射線を用いた照射実験が行われてきた。これ らの照射前後の有機高分子の構造を調べる手段として赤外顕微鏡(以下 IRT)を用いた。図 1 に顕微赤外法を用いて PC における C=O 基の吸光度をマッピング測定した結果を示す。 表示している領域は 4000×4000 μm2 である。図から吸光度すなわち面密度にストライプパ ターンが存在することが確認できる。本研究では単位面積あたりの各官能基のモル数を面 密度とし、それをパラメータにしてイオントラック生成に及ぼす面密度の影響を評価し た。, Domestic conference

    The 66th JAPS Spring Meeting, 2019, Mar. 2019, Japanese, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ookayama Campus, ポリエチレンテレフタレート(PET)の検出閾値は製造法などによって一定の幅で変化することで知られ ている。その閾値を制御することができれば、放射線混成場において任意の重イオンを選択的に検出す る新たな固体飛跡検出器の開発につながると考える。本研究は PET の閾値を決定する潜在イオントラッ ク構造の変化を詳細に解析することを目的としている。先行する研究から PET の各官能基の放射線化学 収率(G 値)と阻止能の関係には明確なステップがあることがわかっている[1]。このステップ状の変化は PET の検出閾値と密接に関係していると考えられる。本研究では G 値のステップ近傍での損傷構造を解 明すべく、2.5μm の PET 薄膜のスタックに B-11 イオンの照射を行い、照射前後の赤外線吸収スペクトル を求め、G 値の評価を行った。また同素材で 13μ, Domestic conference

    The 66th JAPS Spring Meeting, 2019, Mar. 2019, Japanese, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ookayama Campus, 高分子系固体飛跡検出器であるポリアリルジグリコールカーボネート(PADC)やポリエチレン テレフタレート(PET)、ビスフェノール A ポリカーボネート(PC)中に形成されるイオントラ ックについての系統的な研究が行われている。イオントラックの構造分析の手法としては主に赤 外分光分析が用いられており[1]、先行する研究ではその手法により、ポリカプロラクタム(ナイ ロン6)に水素イオンを照射した際の吸光度変化および化学的損傷パラメータを求めている[2]。 本研究ではアミド基を含む高分子であるポリテトラメチレンアジパミド(ナイロン4,6)とポ リヘキサメチレンアジパミド(ナイロン6,6)に C イオンを照射した際の吸光度変化と化学的損 傷パラメータを求めた。Fig.1 に未照射ナイロン6,6薄膜の赤外線吸収スペクトルを示す。実験で は Goodfello, Domestic conference

    The 66th JAPS Spring Meeting, 2019, Mar. 2019, Japanese, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ookayama Campus, ポリアリルジグリコールカーボネート(PADC)は最も感度の高いエッチング型飛跡検出 器として知られている。近年、PADC 内の潜在飛跡形成機構の解明のための研究が体系的に 進められており、エーテル基が最も損傷を受けやすいこと、新たな端点としてヒドロキシル 基が生成されることなどが明らかにされた。また、赤外分光法を用いた研究において PADC にガンマ線を照射すると 60 kGy 程度の低線量域まではエーテル基のみが損傷を受け、60 kGy 以降の線量ではじめてカーボネートエステルの損傷が始まることを確認できた[1]。こ のカーボネートエステルが損傷する吸収線量を「臨界線量」と定義した。この段階的な損傷 過程をラジカルの生成と消滅との関係で理解するために電子スピン共鳴分光法(ESR)を適 用し分析を行った。ESR 法において PADC に液体窒素温度下, Domestic conference

  • An up-to-date radial dose distribution theory for ion tracks and its applications to detection thresholds of PET detectors

    The 65th JSAP Spring Meeting 2018, Mar. 2018, Japanese, Waseda University, 炭素イオンまでの比較的軽いイオンでは相対速度が 1%以上の領域で両者 の式から得られる実効電荷に差はなく、鉄イオンより重いイオンでは相対速度が 1%から 30%の領 域で Schiwietz らの実効電荷が Heckman の実効電荷を上回ることがわかった。さらに検出閾値に おける線量分布を計算し、イオントラック形成機構に関する考察を行った。その結果、局所線量が増加するほど感度も増加することがわかり、局所線量が大きくなるとイオントラック により深い損傷を与えると考えられる。また PET 検出器閾値での Geant4-DNA シミュレーションの 結果も発表したいと考えている。, Domestic conference

    The 65th JSAP Spring Meeting 2018, Mar. 2018, Japanese, Waseda University, 確認するべき一つの課題は、水のヒドロキシル基のモル吸光係数と高分子中の新しい端点に なっているヒドロキシル基のそれが同一であると考えてよいかどうかというものである。本研 究ではカール・フィッシャー電量適定法と赤外分光法を用いて、高分子中にヒドロキシル基を 有するポリビニルアルコール(PVA)を用いてそのモル吸光係数を求めた。市販のPVA薄膜の厚 さは最も薄いものでも 10 μm を超えており、ヒドロキシル基伸縮のピークは飽和してしまい、 定量的な評価はできなかった。自作のPVA薄膜の赤外線スペクトルを図2に示す。膜厚はおよ そ 5 μm であった。可能な限り脱気した状態で赤外線スペクトルを求め、水が含まれていない と仮定してモル吸光係数を求めたところ、1.2x104 M-1cm-1という値が得られている。講演では 薄膜に含まれている水分量を補正したモ, Domestic conference

    The 78th JSAP Autum Meeting, Sep. 2017, Japanese, Fukuoka International Congress Center, 昨年の秋の年会において重合度の異なる PADC やモノマーである ADC の赤外線吸収スペクトルについて報告し、3000 cm-1付近のCH2(メチレン基)とCH(メチン基)の伸縮振動に帰属されるピークの強度比と重合度との関係について報告した。具体的には、3 つのピークのうち 2960 cm-1 と 2890 cm-1 はメチレン基に帰属され、真ん中にある 2920 cm-1 はメチン基に帰属される。図 1 に示すように PADC 中の H のほとんどはメチレン基を構成しており、メチン基を構成しているのは、繰り返し構造あたり 2 個のみである。また、これらは重合の際に生まれる三叉路に位置している。これまでの PADC 中イオントラック構造の研究において、エーテル基とカーボネートエステル基が高い放射線感受性を有しており、3 次元構造を生み出しているポリ, Domestic conference

    The 63rd JSAP Spring Meeting, 2016, Mar. 2016, Japanese, Tokyo Institute of Technology, 現在高分子トラック損傷構造について赤外顕微鏡を用いた分析が行われている。従来用いて きた赤外分光器と比べると測定域が小さく顕微鏡下で任意に測定点を決めることが出来るため、 高フルエンスを実現するためにビームを細くするような小さな範囲を測定するために利用され ている。しかし、ビーム照射域を絞ると強度にばらつきが生じることが知られており、そのため 正確な定量分析が阻まれる。そこで、赤外顕微鏡の機能の一つである任意に格子点数や測定面積 を決めることが可能である顕微マッピング測定機能の活用を試みた。同機能を用いることによ りビーム強度の分布を明らかにすると共に、照射前後の吸光度比より化学的損傷パラメータの 算出が可能となる。さらに過去に得られた結果と比較することにより、顕微マッピング機能の有 効性の確認を行うことが本研究の目的である。, Domestic conference

    The 61st JSPS Spring Meting 2014, Mar. 2014, Japanese, Aoyama Gakuin University, エッチング型飛跡検出器は、プロトンや重イオンの通り道である飛跡を化学エッチング処理によって拡大し、それぞれを、顕微鏡下においてエッチピットとして観察する放射線検出器である。最も検出感度の高いCR-39 という商品名でよばれるポリアリルジグリコールカーボネート(PADC)がその代表的な検出器として知られている。感度のより高い素子を開発することは、ひとつの研究の方向性として重要であるが、ある検出閾値を有する検出器が必要とされるようなケースが生まれている。例えば、高強度レーザー駆動イオン加速実験において、電子線やX 線、プロトンからなる複雑な混合場において重イオンを検出する必要が生まれている。この場合、プロトンやアルファ線には感度は持たないが、CやOイオンには感度を有するようなエッチング型飛跡検出器の適用が期待されている。Fig. 1 はポリエチレンテレフ, Domestic conference

    27th Workshop on Solids State Nuclear Track Detectors, Mar. 2013, Japanese, Kobe University, PADC飛跡検出器はその潜在飛跡形成に関する研究が進められる一方で、様々な分野で使用されている。今後より一層の高精度なイオン計測をするためには照射環境が検出感度に与える影響についても精査する必要がある。特にレーザー駆動粒子加速実験に注目した時に、試料は真空中に保持されているため、その真空が与える影響を無視することはできない。そこで本実験では、今まで実験がなされていなかった重イオンに対する真空効果の影響について調べた。その結果、重イオンに対する真空効果の影響をはじめて確認することができ、真空保持時間に依存した検出器の応答特性を評価した。, Domestic conference

    27th Workshop on Solids State Nuclear Track Detectors, Mar. 2013, Japanese, Kobe University, これまでPADC薄膜に6 MeV/n以下の重イオン照射し、赤外分光を用いて高分子飛跡材料中のイオントラック構造分析についての研究を進めてきた。特にPADC中のカルボニル基の放射線化学収率(G値)はプロトン照射によるが最も大きい値であった。そこでコバルト60を用いたガンマー線照射を実施したところ、プロトンのG値よりも大きな値を得たことから、より阻止能が低いほどG値が大きくなるという結果が確認された。そこで本研究ではこれまでよりも高エネルギーのC (1.10, 1.25 and 1.39 GeV)、 Fe (20.8 and 22.8 GeV)、Xe (10 GeV)イオンを照射し化学的損傷パラメータを求めた。, Domestic conference

  • The diagnosis method for laser-accelerated high energy ion beams using backscattered particles

    27, Mar. 2013, Japanese, Kobe University, CR-39を用いた高強度高エネルギーイオンビームに対する簡易診断法を開発した。適切な散乱体の上に重ねたCR-39に対して、加速器にてHeイオンをエネルギー及びフルエンスともに検出閾値以上の条件で照射した。多段階エッチング法により解析を行った結果、CR-39の裏面には後方散乱粒子によってエッチピットが形成されていることが明らかとなった。また、裏面のエッチピットの分布すなわち後方散乱粒子を利用して高エネルギーイオンビームの診断が可能であることを確認した。この手法を、クラスターターゲットを用いたレーザー駆動イオン加速実験に適用し、50 MeV/nのHeイオンの検出に成功した。, Domestic conference

    The 64th JSAP Spring Meeting 2017, Mar. 2013, Japanese, Pacifico Yokohama, 固体飛跡検出器の中で最も感度が高く、中性子やラドン計測にも使用可能な検出器としてポリ アリルジグリコールカーボネート(PADC)がある。PADC は高強度電磁パルス下で電子線や X 線に感度を持たず、特定のイオンのみを弁別して測定することが可能なのでレーザー駆動イオン 加速器実験にも利用される。しかし、検出感度を決定する構造上の特性についてまだ未解明な部 分が多い。そのため、本研究ではPADCのプロトンに対する検出閾値である17 eV/nm付近のH 及び He イオン照射を行い、その赤外線分光分析から構造上の特性を解明することを目的とした。 化学的損傷パラメータとしては、トラック単位距離あたりの官能基の損傷数である損傷密度、官 能基が失われている径方向の広がりを示す実効的トラックコア半径、放射線化学収率(G 値)を 利用し、これら 3 つの化学的損傷, Domestic conference

    27, Mar. 2013, Japanese, Kobe University, 高強度レーザーによる固体ターゲットを用いたレーザー駆動イオン加速実験では、最大で40 MeVのプロトンの発生が確認されている。イオン計測にはCR-39 が広く利用されているが、最大エネルギーの決定精度については、様々な問題点が残されていた。本研究では積層したCR-39 を用い、レーザーによって加速されたイオンの計測を行なった。エッチピットが確認された最終層のCR-39 に対して、多段階エッチング法を適用することで、最終層内での飛程を算出し、最大エネルギーをE=0.1 MeV という高い精度で決定した。また、ZnS(Ag)蛍光体を用いたオンライン型検出器による計測も行った。, Domestic conference
