    Abstract The retention of contaminants within low-conductivity regions such as clay lenses and aquitards can greatly affect groundwater remediation processes. The aim of this study was to experimentally investigate the effects of the geometry of low-conductivity zones, conductivity contrast, and flow regime on solute flushing. We conducted a series of flushing tests in cylindrical models containing a cylindrical low-conductivity zone (i.e., low-K zone) embedded in a highly conductive medium (i.e., high-K zone). Seven models comprising four high-conductivity-contrast (SL, SS, LL, and LS), one medium-contrast (LLM), one low-contrast (LLL), and one homogeneous (H) models were considered. Experiments were conducted at two flow rates (Q = 0.6 and 26 cm3/min) for each heterogeneous model (SL, SS, LL, LS, LLM, and LLL) to compare the flushing processes in different flow regimes. First, we verified the validity of our experiments by comparing the results of the H model from an analytical solution with our experiment. The results of the high-contrast models showed that for a diffusion-dominated regime (Q = 0.6 cm3/min), the pore volume injected (PVI) required to flush out solute mass was much smaller than that in an advection-dominated regime (Q = 26 cm3/min). To evaluate the pore volumes required to flush out solutes for the four high-contrast models, we introduced a parameter P0.01, which is defined as the PVI needed for the relative concentration to become 0.01 at the middle of the low-K zone. P0.01 decreases with increasing the specific surface area of the low-K zone for diffusion-dominated regimes, while it increases with increasing the length of the low-K zone for advection-dominated regimes. We also determined the importance of the effect of K contrast on solute retention by comparing the results of three different models of K contrast (LL, LLM, and LLL).

    Asian rice ( Oryza sativa L.) is consumed by more than half of the world's population. Despite its global importance, the process of early rice domestication remains unclear. During domestication, wild rice ( Oryza rufipogon Griff.) acquired non-seed-shattering behavior, allowing humans to increase grain yield. Previous studies argued that a reduction in seed shattering triggered by the sh4 mutation led to increased yield during rice domestication, but our experiments using wild introgression lines show that the domesticated sh4 allele alone is insufficient for shattering loss in O . rufipogon . The interruption of abscission layer formation requires both sh4 and qSH3 mutations, demonstrating that the selection of shattering loss in wild rice was not as simple as previously suggested. Here we identified a causal single-nucleotide polymorphism at qSH3 within the seed-shattering gene OsSh1 , which is conserved in indica and japonica subspecies but absent in the circum -aus group of rice. Through harvest experiments, we further demonstrated that seed shattering alone did not significantly impact yield; rather, yield increases were observed with closed panicle formation controlled by SPR3 and further augmented by nonshattering, conferred by integration of sh4 and qSH3 alleles. Complementary manipulation of panicle shape and seed shattering results in a mechanically stable panicle structure. We propose a stepwise route for the earliest phase of rice domestication, wherein selection of visible SPR3 -controlled closed panicle morphology was instrumental in the sequential recruitment of sh4 and qSH3 , which together led to the loss of shattering.

    For slug-injection tracer tests, tracer concentrations below the detection limit of the measurement instrument can cause truncation of the observed data. This study investigated the truncation effect on the estimation error of parameters based on analytical solutions and the results of laboratory-scale experiments. Spatial moment analysis was performed to estimate the measured total mass and transport parameters, including the pore velocity and the longitudinal and transverse dispersivities. Increasing the travel distance and detection limit caused the measured mass and dispersivities to be underestimated regardless of the dimensionality because hydrodynamic dispersion occurs with increasing travel distance, which smoothens the concentration front. The one- and two-dimensional cases showed that the truncation effect on the measured mass and longitudinal dispersivity depended on dimensionality. In contrast, the pore velocity showed no such dependence; the center of mass did not change as the unmeasured portion due to truncation was increased because the plume, which exhibited a Gaussian distribution, was truncated symmetrically. In the experiment, the measured mass and dispersivities likewise depended on the travel distance and detection limit, but there were large differences in the detection limit at which the dimensionless parameter reached a value of zero between the experimental results and analytical solution. This is because the initial plume in the experiment was of a finite size. Thus, experimental design factors such as the scale, device, and dimensionality should be considered to minimize the estimation error of transport parameters, excluding the pore velocity.

    The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of upscaling on spatial distribution characteristic of hydraulic conductivity and solute dispersion for a stratified porous model. A geostatistical analysis allowed quantification of spatial characteristic for the upscaled models. As a result, the smoothing of spatial distribution due to upscaling reduced the heterogeneity, whereas the spatial correlation scale was preserved. In order to identify the relationship between the degrees of solute dispersion and upscaling, a combined experimental and numerical investigation is conducted. The data from the experiment are utilized to validate a numerical model that is then used to estimate the strength of the dispersion processes (i.e., longitudinal and transverse macrodispersivities) in the upscaled models. It is shown that upscaling does not affect the transverse macrodispersivity, while the longitudinal macrodispersivity is underestimated due to the decrease of heterogeneity during the upscaling process. Moreover, the result suggested that the mass transfer between layers be altered by increase in the layer thickness due to upscaling, leading to the plume spreading in the longitudinal direction.

    Most of dehydrated cake which was generated by turbid water treatment of the process for making crushed stone and crushed sand is subjected to landfill disposal. The effective use of dehydrated cake discharged from crushed stone quarry is required to relieve the tightness of the residual capacities of disposal sites and to secure limited natural resources. In this study, a dehydrated cake discharged from crushed stone quarry with excellent caking properties was examined to see if it can be used for soil materials, such as impermeable materials. In addition, physical and mechanical tests were conducted on the dehydrated cake, and then its properties were compared with those of commonly used cohesive soils. It was found that the dehydrated cake had significantly different properties from those of general cohesive soils, and it also did not match the mechanical properties of general compacted soils. Thus, it was concluded that the dehydrated cake cannot be handled based on the commonly used soil standards. In addition, it was found that reducing the water content and adjusting the particle size are effective in increasing the strength of dehydrated cake and that reducing the water content is particularly effective.

    Intermediate-scale laboratory solute transport experiments were conducted in physically heterogeneous and homogeneous porous formations to investigate the impacts of upscaling of hydraulic conductivity on the behavior of solute macrodispersion. Solute transport in porous media based on geostatistics was visualized and solute macrodispersion parameters were quantified by using dye tracer imaging technique. The results showed the longitudinal and transverse macrodispersivity estimates decrease with the increase of the degree of upscaling due to a lower heterogeneity corresponding to the upscaling. The macrodispersivity estimates were almost constant in heterogeneous porous formations having the cell size of less than 6 cm, which is the correlation length of non-upscaled porous formation, whereas for large cell sizes macrodispersivity estimates depended strongly on the length of the cell. As the degree of upscaling increased, the horizontal distance between forward and backward edges of the solute plume decreased.

    Solute transport phenomenon is one of the crucial issues in predicting and spreading of a contaminant plume in natural aquifers. In this study, conservative solute transport simulations were conducted in two-dimensional heterogeneous aquifers to assess the transitional development of temporal moment characteristics up to the fourth order associated with macrodispersion phenomena. The aquifer system investigated here relied on the hydrogeologic data in the southwest of the Netherlands and was modeled as the heterogeneous aquifer with a certain geometric variance. Three types of physical heterogeneities in subsurface materials were represented as randomly correlated hydraulic conductivity fields, which were geostatistically generated under the isotropic assumption of the correlation length. Random walk particle tracking linked with temporal moment approach, which was based on observed breakthrough curves at several predefined control planes, demonstrated asymptotic variations of the second and fourth moments. Results also showed that the degree of the physical heterogeneity affected the degree of the increase of each moment, indicating that this plume behavior reflected the hydraulic conductivity distribution on which the evolution of plume was considerably dependent.

    In this study, intermediate scale dye tracer experiments were conducted in a 1m length, 1m height and 0.03m thickness sandbox to quantify macrodispersion phenomena in stratified porous formations and to elucidate the effect of the layering on the degree of macrodispersion. Spatial and temporal moment approaches based on a snapshot of tracer distribution and NaCl concentration at a point, respectively, were applied to identify the macrodispersivities in longitudinal and lateral directions. The experimental results indicated that the longitudinal macrodispersivity depends on the travel distance of solute and the degree of heterogeneity in stratified formations with two or four layers, while the transverse macrodispersivity decreases with the increase of travel distance and depends on the magnitude of the initial solute distribution. A difference between longitudinal macrodispersivity estimates using spatio-temporal moments was also clarified.

    Intermediate-scale laboratory solute transport experiments were conducted in heterogeneous porous formations comprised by 144 sand cells. Visualization of dye solute was applied to transitional estimates in longitudinal and transverse macrodispersivities caused by the presence of heterogeneities. Results showed that a distinct transition of the longitudinal macrodispersivity was confirmed due to the local heterogeneity while a continuous decrease in transverse dispersivity was shown despite of the initial source location. Quantification methodologies were proposed to achieve the ensemble estimation of five distinct transitions of macrodispersivities and the local heterogeneity quantification based on solute pathways, leading to appropriate outcomes relevant to not only the variation and distribution of estimates but the degree of the longitudinal macrodispersivity.

  • Random walk particle tracking for quantifying anomalous transport in laboratory-scale, heterogeneous porous formations

    Intermediate-scale laboratory solute transport experiments on heterogeneous porous media were conducted in a 1 m length, 1 m height and 0.03 m thickness sandbox with small blocks of fine sand. Use of visualization of dye solution linked with spatial moment analysis was applied to the identification of the changes in anomalous transport in longitudinal and transverse directions caused by the presence of physical heterogeneities. Random Walk Particle Tracking (RWPT) was employed to reconstruct the dye tracer behavior in the abrupt changes of physical properties of the porous materials. The applicability of RWPT was also verified numerically through macrodispersivity estimation using spatial moment approaches based on dye tracer distributions, demonstrating a good agreement between the experimental and numerical results. Experimental and numerical results adequately displayed the macrodispersivity evolution subject to the existence of abrupt change of hydraulic conductivity. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that the physical heterogeneity relevant to the hydraulic conductivity is not a unique factor to define the longitudinal macrodispersivity.

    A series of solute transport simulations in physically heterogeneous aquifers were conducted to assess the impacts on macrodispersion under saturated flow conditions. The aquifer system of concern relied on the hydrogeological data in a site in the Netherlands and was generated geostatistically as randomly correlated hydraulic conductivity. Ensemble computations in 100 realizations were based upon random walk particle tracking linked with temporal moments to estimate three macrodispersivities. The results showed the scale dependence of macrodispersivities and the asymptotic nature of longitudinal macrodispersivity. From a practical standpoint, the simulations demonstrated that control plane and its middle element provide almost identical macrodispersivity estimates in terms of transverse mixing, but differ markedly from estimates of longitudinal mixing.

    For deep and/or large excavation of soil with a high ground water level, three-dimensional seepage flow through soil within a cofferdam is a problem. Three-dimensionally concentrated flow lowers the stability against seepage failure more than in the two-dimensional condition. To clarify the three-dimensional seepage failure mechanism, experiments were conducted under three-dimensional flow conditions for various cases, and analyses of FEM seepage flow and stability against seepage failure of soil were carried out. Theoretical critical hydraulic head differences based on the Prismatic failure concept are defined as HPF. From experiments, the hydraulic head differences at an abrupt change of discharge Hd, at the onset of soil deformation Hy, and at failure Hf are considered. The self-stabilizing effects and the method for estimating Hf using the value HPF are discussed.

    近年,耐用年数を迎える農業用管路の増加に伴い,非開削での施工が可能な管路更生工法の採用が進展している。しかしながら,更生管の力学挙動は未解明で,設計手法も確立されていない現状にある。更生工法では,老朽化した既設管を撤去せずに管路を更新するため,半永久的に更生管外周に既設管が残存する。本研究では,既設管損傷レベルと荷重条件を変化させた土中埋設実験を実施し,既設管が更生管力学挙動に与える影響について検討した。その結果,既設管損傷レベルの進行に伴い,更生管のたわみが増大することが明らかになった。また,損傷状態によっては,既設管と更生管が点接触することで,局所的に卓越したひずみが発生することがわかった。さらに,地表面偏心荷重の場合,ひずみが卓越する箇所が損傷レベルにより異なることが明らかになった。

    This paper discusses an analytical study on the pipe rehabilitation method for the purpose of establishing a fundamental design standard. In this method, as the new pipe is directly inserted into the aging pipe, there are several possibilities for construction in terms of cost reduction. Prior to the current study, it was not clear how the damaged outer pipe mechanically influenced the inner pipe when an external force was applied to the ground. In the present study, centrifuge model tests and finite element analyses for the buried pipe are carried out in an effort to evaluate interaction problem. Results of the testing and analyses indicate that the deformation mode of the new pipe is largely dependent on the damage level of the outer pipe. Additionally, the concentration of stress within the inner pipe occurs at the position where there is cracking of the outer pipe in a certain damaged condition.     Recently, trenchless rehabilitation methods for aging irrigation pipes are often used. In this method, a new pipe is inserted into an aging pipe. Therefore, the rehabilitated pipeline consists of the outer aging pipe and the inner rehabilitated pipe. However, the mechanical influences of the damaged outer pipes on the inner rehabilitated pipes are not clear. In the present study, in order to reveal the influences, model experiments were conducted under the different damage levels of the aging pipe and loading positions. Experimental results indicate that the deflection of the rehabilitated pipe increases according to the damage level of the aging pipe. In addition, the strain concentration occurs at the top and the bottom of the rehabilitated pipe due to the point contact of the edge of the aging pipe. It is also found that the deflection and the strain distribution of the rehabilitated pipe under the eccentric load are significantly affected by the damage level of the aging pipe.

However, the outer pipe, if at ultimate limit state, has almost no influence on the mechanical behavior of the inner pipe.     Risk assessment is meaningful to quantitatively define adverse effects on human health and natural environment and it is possible to choose the most effective action related to groundwater contamination. In this paper, parameter uncertainties in risk assessment in geo-environmental system are examined through a probabilistic application of deterministic contaminant transport model using Latin hypercube sampling. One of the agricultural chemicals, 1,3-dichloropropene, is of concern to simulate its fate released from a line source in a two-dimensional homogeneous aquifer. The results indicate that the degree of the effect of parameter uncertainty is spatially different at exposure points and the dispersivity and the retardation factor are influential parameters to risk values while the water ingestion rate and the reduction factor of contaminant source play small roles in predicting the risk. Furthermore, it is found that the parameter uncertainty should be addressed in risk assessment procedures for groundwater contamination associated with agricultural chemicals.     To evaluate the permeability of the ground reinforced with Geogrid, two types of tests; a triaxial permeability test and a large scale-pit test were conducted. The former is an element test which is not allowed to move soil particles under different conditions. The latter is a model test which is not allowed to move soil particles under different conditions. The results of the former test concluded that there is no difference between specimen reinforced with Geogrid and specimen unreinforced Geogrid when their compaction degrees were enough. The results of the latter test concluded that Geogrid restricts the movement of soil particles.

    The aim of this study is to assess time-related capture zones relevant to the activity of extraction wells with different pumping rates. The flow is steady and two-dimensional in a homogeneous domain with isotropic and anisotropic transmissivities. Spatial locations of time-related well capture zones for nonreactive solute are delineated using backward particle tracking approach. The results showed the effects of well configuration, pumping rate and interaction between individual capture zones belonging to each extraction well on the variation of second order spatial moments as well as the form of capture zones. Moreover, total probability that initial particle distributions associated with time-related capture zones were extracted by the well within a given time was identified through random walk particle tracking. Extraction well comprising the outer capture zone displayed a substantial increase of total probability due to the particle pass through a boundary between the inner and outer capture zones.

  • An evaluation of dispersion characteristics through a sandy mud soil layer

    Laboratory tracer experiments are conducted to elucidate the effect of sandy mud soil on dispersion phenomena under steady saturated flow condition using genetic algorithm linked with an analytical solution of the advection-dispersion equation and temporal moment analysis based on concentration variation. The results show that sandy mud soil layer contributes to the development of complicated transport pathways and provides not only the increase of longitudinal dispersivity but the substantial decrease of transverse dispersivity.   • Decrease in the safety factor for seepage failure of subsoil due to bridge abutment construction within a cofferdam

    This paper discusses the decrease in the safety factor for seepage failure of subsoil due to bridge abutment construction within a cofferdam for two cases: (1) where piping occurred in the subsoil under a downstream bridge abutment, in which gravel was overlaid with silty sand of low permeability and (2) where piping did not occur in the upstream subsoil, where gravel prevailed. Analyses of seepage flow and stability against seepage failure were conducted before and after the abutment construction for these cases, and the following results were obtained: The safety factor against seepage failure of subsoil decreased to F(s)=0.809 (1/1.81) after the abutment construction for the downstream case, and to F(s)=2.700 (1/2.30) for the upstream case. This is because the exit area of flowing water in the cofferdam decreased to 1/2.26.

    Laboratory tracer experiments are conducted in homogeneous and two-layered flow fields under various hydraulic gradient conditions. NaCl solution dyed with Brilliant Blue FCF is used as a tracer in order to measure NaCl breakthrough curves and obtain images of dye tracer movement. Inverse analysis through genetic algorithm and image analysis are employed to estimate dispersivity, dispersion coefficient and retardation factor. The results show that dispersivity estimated from image analysis is about one order smaller than that of GA estimates. Moreover, it is revealed that tracer is slightly retarded relative to pore water velocity. As for parameter estimation in two-layered media, the values of equivalent dispersivity to the entire flow region exist between the values estimated in each layer. Estimated dispersivity in layered media depends on transport pathway of contaminant, suggesting the importance of observation location in parameter estimation problem.

    Tracer experiments are carried out in water flow tank with 80cm height, 80cm length and 20cm width, which is filled homogeneously with two different types of sand materials. Brilliant Blue FCF, which makes the flow paths visible, is applied as a point source at the surface of the flow field. Dispersivity and dispersion coefficient are estimated using a time series of images of tracer transition. Experimental results show a linear dependence of dispersion coefficients on tracer velocity at a certain velocity and exhibits non-linearity in the range of higher water content. While values of dispersivity show an independency of rainfall intensity, dispersivity in unsaturated flow region is approximately one order larger than that in saturated flow region, indicating that transport parameters depend strongly on the water content where solute passes through.

    An one-dimensional finite element mass transport model with nitrogen species transformation was developed to predict the transport of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N), nitrite-nitrogen (NO2-N), and ammoniumnitrogen (NH4-N) in porous media. Field experiments using sulfate ammonium wereperformed and temporal and spatial distributions of NO3-N concentration and volumetric water content were measured. The numbers of nitrifers and denitrifers, and pH values were also measured. The rate of aquifer recharge and rate coefficients of the transformation were calibrated to fit the measured distributions of water content and NO3-N concentration at 28th day of experiments. The validity of this model was examined and confirmed by comparing the results of numerical analysis under the calibrated values with measured data at 42nd day of experiments. It was found that there is a good correlation between the number of microbe and rate coefficients, which greatly affect the prediction results. The variation of the NO3-N concentration is able to be predicted through this model in the experimental site when appropriate rate coefficients are used based on environmental conditions, which have the effect on microbial activity.

    既設開水路内に管路を敷設する開水路内配管工法の確立を目標に,老朽化した開水路内に設置された管路屈曲部を対象にスラスト力を模擬した水平力を負荷する実験を実施してきた.令和2年度に実施した模型実験では,載荷中に模型管が軸方向に回転し,正確に水平抵抗力が計測できていないことが明らかとなった.そこで,令和3年度には,載荷装置を改良し,同条件での実験を実施した.概ね前年度と同様の結論を得たが,水路底板と水路壁が固定された実験条件では,管と開水路模型が一体となり挙動する様子が観察され,前年度と異なる新たな知見を得た.また,管と水路壁の間の距離を変えた条件での実験ケースについて,より詳細な検討を行い,本研究で実施された埋設条件では,距離と抵抗力が概ね線形で近似できることを示すとともに,画像解析を通して,管および水路壁周辺地盤の変形挙動ならびに抵抗力発揮メカニズムを解明した.さらに,既設開水路内に2本の管路が敷設される二条配管時の力学挙動を解明するため,2本の模型管に定荷重を負荷した載荷実験に着手し,現在までに基本ケースの実験を終了した. 上記のスラスト力を受ける管路屈曲部の力学挙動の検討に加え,管底側部の応力集中の緩和を目的としたEPS基礎を提案し,その有効性についても実験的に検証してきた.令和2年度に実施した模型実験では,模型管の外径が165mmと小さく,一部のEPS基礎では,応力集中を抑制する効果が確認できなかった.そこで令和3年度には,模型管の外径を313mmとし,地盤の相対密度を前年度の30%から60%に変更することで,より実際に近い埋設条件を再現した.実験結果よりEPS基礎を用いた全てのケースで管底側部の応力集中を抑制する効果が確認された.

  • 異常輸送理論と群知能を融合した「地下ダム管理モデル」の構築と実装

    本研究は,地下ダム湖にて肥料成分が移動,濃縮,流出する力学現象に関する科学的洞察と人工知能の一分野である群知能・機械学習により,新たな「地下ダム管理モデル」の構築と実装を目的としている.本年度は,3つのテーマに対して実験的・数値解析的に取り組んだ. 1つ目は,実フィールドを対象として,物理的・経済的に制約の強い実フィールドのパラメータ推定の効率化を図るべく,単独の観測孔を利用した単孔式希釈試験に基づく簡易推定手法を開発した.対象フィールドは,喜界島の琉球石灰岩地域である.単孔式希釈試験ではNaClをトレーサとして,観測孔内部の地下水域へ均一に投入し,複数の深度にてNaCl濃度を時系列計測した.観測濃度データを理論解と適合して,ダルシー流速,地下水流速を簡便かつ迅速に推定した.実験の結果,当該地域では帯水層の深部ほど希釈スピードが低減することが確認され,深度とともに透水係数は小さくなることを示唆した.また,周辺の地下水の動水勾配と現場透水試験の結果から得られた水平地下水流速と比較すると,単孔式希釈試験から得られた流速の推定値は概ね一致し,提案手法による地下水流速の推定は一定の信頼性があることを結論付けた.2つ目は,喜界地下ダム流域の地下水流動にかかわる三次元有限要素モデルを再構築した.群知能を用いて地下ダム帯水層の透水係数分布を効率よく同定するとともに,モデル拡張したランダムウォーク粒子追跡解析により各集水井の硝酸態窒素の取り込み状況について数値解析した.3つ目は,模型実験にて喜界第2地下ダム湖の移流分散現象を定量化した.喜界第2地下ダム湖における溶質輸送経路は塩水くさびの影響を受けて上昇し,北堤帯水層の高透水層は溶質分布の拡大に寄与する.また,地下水面付近の移流分散現象は北堤と南堤で差異はなく,ダム壁建造後は,北堤より南堤の方が観測濃度は高くなる可能性があることを示した.

    To achieve the method and procedure of performance based design for agricultural irrigation facilities, detailed performance of both material and structures are necessary. Behavior of important materials such as concrete, soil and rock materials are investigated with experimental and analytical method. For concrete material, the fracture energy, which is an important parameter for numerical fracture analyses, is measured by newly developed experimental method. The method is proved to be applicable to dam concrete which contains coarse aggregate of large size. Magnitude and behavior of shrinkage in dam concrete are also investigated through experiments. For concrete structures, the depth of cracking are measured using ultrasonic measures and its validity and accuracy are studied. Soil is another important material for embankment and basement, but piping and other kind of seepage fracture leads to catastrophic destruction. Using stochastic, numerical, and experimental methods, the danger of seepage fractures are evaluated. The obtained result will be used to determine the design standard of embankments to prevent seepage fractures. For rock materials, the effect of weathering is investigated. For artificially weathered rock materials, the strength and deformation characteristics are measured. By these experiments, the conditions which lead to serious weathering are also examined.
