In this paper, we examine gender-specific reference-dependent preferences in a trust game experiment. Different amounts of show-up fee and one question eliciting subjects' reference points were used to categorize subjects into three frames-the gain frame, the gain or loss frame, and the loss frame. We mainly found that (i) male subjects are risk-seeking in both the gain frame and the loss frame; (ii) women are not always more risk-averse than men; and (iii) women display other-regarding preferences only when they are in a gain frame. These results demonstrate the importance of taking gender difference and the reference-dependent preference into account together when examining individuals' economic behaviors.

In the past decade, sales of electrical and electronic equipment have undergone explosive growth worldwide, while at the same time, the life cycles of electrical and electronic equipment have been getting shorter. This has resulted in large numbers of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) being generated, which causes serious environmental problems that each country has to face. In this paper, we use the system dynamic method to analyze how China's “WEEE processing fund” policy, wherein levies or subsidies are set on appropriate targets, influences the economic and environmental conditions of participants in the WEEE management system. The simulations results suggest that the “WEEE processing fund” policy could improve the economic status of those receiving subsidies without losing the economic revenue from levies and improve the entire system's ability to recover and process waste equipment.

In this study, we conducted a stated choice survey in Shanghai in order to examine the attitudes of Shanghai residents towards electric vehicles and their attributes. Multinomial Logit and Random Parameter Logit models were used to analyze the response data for three samples-the full sample, a subsample of potential electric vehicle purchasers, and a subsample of unlikely electric vehicle purchasers. We found that the respondents in each of the three groups preferred electric vehicles with a longer driving range, a shorter charging time, a faster maximum speed, lower pollution emissions, lower fuel cost, and a lower price. However, an overlong driving range seems not to be a must for potential electric vehicles (EV) purchasers. In addition, a comparison of the two subsamples showed that potential electric vehicle purchasers were willing to pay more than their counterparts for enhancing vehicle attributes. We also investigated the determinants of likely electric vehicle purchase and found a number of demographic characteristics that were statistically significant.

Sajio et al. (2015) showed that the mate choice mechanism for a symmetric prisoner's dilemma (PD) game implements cooperation in backward elimination of weakly dominated strategies (BEWDS), and it attained almost full cooperation in their experiment. This study theoretically shows, first, that this mechanism works well in the class of quasi-dilemma (QD) games, such as asymmetric PD games and coordination games. Second, the class of BEWDS-implementable games is exactly the same as the class of QD games. Third, the mechanism cannot implement cooperation in a subgame perfect equilibrium. Finally, we confirm that the mate choice mechanism works well experimentally for an asymmetric PD game.

We conduct experiments to investigate the convergence of contributions in the voluntary contribution mechanism (VCM) with two quasi-linear payoff functions. One is linear with respect to private goods and nonlinear with respect to public goods we call it “QL1.” The other is linear with respect to public goods and nonlinear with respect to private goods we call it “QL2.” The system with QL1, built on the assumption of self-interested players and myopic Cournot best response dynamics, is not stable, but the system with QL2 has a dominant Nash equilibrium. This theoretical result predicts a “pulsing” of contributions in the VCM with QL1. Our experimental observations demonstrate that individual contributions are certainly converging to the dominant Nash equilibrium in the experiment with QL2. In the experiments with QL1, however, the dispersion of individual contributions increases progressively with repeated trials, and the contributions are still volatile in the experiments’ last periods, although we do not find a clearly unstable pulsing in the group's total contribution.

Overweight and obesity in adult populations is considered to be a growing epidemic worldwide, and appears to be rapidly increasing in China. From 1992 to 2002, the incidence of overweight in adults increased by 39.0%, while that of obesity doubled. To identify the determinants of adult overweight and obesity in China, micro-level data from a questionnaire survey entitled the Preference Parameters Study,' which was conducted by the Global Centers of Excellence programme at Osaka University, were analysed. In addition to the entire sample, data from urban and rural subsamples were also analysed in order to investigate whether the determinants of overweight and obesity differed. The results suggested that body mass index (BMI) is correlated with subjective well-being, gender, age, labour intensity and drinking and eating habits among urban respondents, and with age, monthly income, number of siblings and eating habits among rural respondents.

We examine the influence of different compensation schemes on the exertion of effort in completing differentiated tasks. The first task is assumed to be boring and has no intrinsic motivation, while the second is assumed to be interesting and has intrinsic motivation. The results are as follows: (1) for the first task, effort levels were lower for high fixed pay than low fixed pay and no payment and were higher for low incentive pay than high incentive pay and no payment. (2) Standard economic theory holds for the second task, which predicts that the higher the incentive, the more effort an individual will exert and the greater the performance, on an average. This study uses a prefectural panel data set to examine the factors that affect the market share of nonprofit and for-profit providers in Japan's long-term care insurance system. Here, we focus on the market size and potential, asymmetric information, and the voluntarism environment. Our findings are as follows: (1) nonprofit organizations have a larger market share in areas with relatively unprofitable market conditions (2) in the case of asymmetric information, experienced nonprofit providers, including government-driven and partial nonprofit providers, have a larger market share than citizen-driven nonprofit and for-profit providers and (3) citizen-driven nonprofit providers have a larger market share in areas with more active civic voluntarism.

Many previous empirical studies have suggested that cooperation and trust affect economic growth. However, the precise relationship between trust and cooperation (i.e. whether trust leads to cooperation or cooperation leads to trust) remains unclear and it is not known how the level of economic development affects the level of cooperation and trust. Using a combination of public goods, gambling game and trust game experiments, we investigate the links among cooperation, trust and economic development in four regions of China. Our results suggest that, first, there is a U-shaped or V-shaped relationship between cooperation and economic development. Second, on the one hand, cooperation leads to trust, and on the other hand, more cooperative behaviour may be created by rewarding trusting behaviour. Third, men are more cooperative and trusting than women. Furthermore, we find that the widely used GSS trust' question from the General Social Survey (GSS) does not predict either cooperation or trust, whereas the questions GSS fair' and GSS help' have weak predictive power for trusting behaviour but not for cooperative behaviour.

This paper reports two experiments involving an ultimatum game, conducted in Japan. There were two treatments in each experiment, which we call the cash session and the point session. The cash session involves introducing cash into the procedure of the experiments. In other words, in a cash session, subjects made decisions while holding cash in their hands, versus having points or tokens as in most prior experiments. We found that, compared to the point sessions, proposers offered more and responders rejected less frequently in the cash sessions. This is evidence that a cash effect exists in ultimatum game experiments. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes an integrated analytical framework consisting of the following three steps: (1) investigation of consumers' preferences, (2) prediction of technology diffusion by taking into account consumers' preferences, and (3) estimation of CO2 emission reduction caused by the diffusion of the examined technology. By using this framework, this paper evaluates the policy measures implemented for disseminating photovoltaics and solar water heaters in terms of the contribution to reducing CO2 emissions from the residential sector. We investigated consumer preferences for these technologies as well as the effects of attributes such as installation cost, energy price, energy efficiency, and perception on consumers' choices. Considering these effects, we developed a model that estimates the diffusion of these technologies into the residential sector of Japan through 2025 and the resulting CO2 emission reduction. We found that the policy measures for the diffusion of photovoltaics that reduce initial cost (e.g., subsidy programs) are more cost effective for reducing CO2 emission than those reducing users' operating expenditure (e.g., feed-in tariff programs). For solar water heater to be able to reduce the CO2 emissions considerably, the public perception must be improved. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In April 2008, specialization in gynecology and obstetrics departments was introduced in the Sennan area of Osaka prefecture in Japan that aimed at solving the problems of regional provisions of obstetrics services (e.g., shortage of obstetricians, overworking of obstetricians, and provision of specialist maternity services for high-risk pregnancies). Under this specialization, the gynecology and obstetrics departments in two city hospitals were combined and reconstructed into two centers, i.e., the gynecological care center in Kaizuka City Hospital and the prenatal care center in Izumisano City Hospital. This paper investigates to what extent and how this specialization affected pregnant women's choices of the prenatal care center and other maternity institutions. We used birth certificate data of 15,927 newborns from the Sennan area between April 1, 2007 and March 30, 2010, for Before and After Analysis to examine changes in pregnant women's choices of maternity institutions before and after the specialization was instituted. Our results indicated that this specialization scheme was, to some extent, successful on the basis of providing maternity services for high-risk pregnancies at the prenatal care center (i.e., Izumisano City Hospital) and having created a positive effect by pregnant women to other facilities in the nearby area. © Adachi et al.

In April 2008, the specialization in departments of obstetrics and gynecology was conducted in Sennan area of Osaka prefecture in Japan, which aims at solving the problems of regional provision of obstetrical service. Under this specialization, the departments of obstetrics and gynecology in two city hospitals were combined as one medical center, whilst one hospital is in charge of the department of gynecology and the other one operates the department of obstetrics. In this paper, we implement a cost-benefit analysis to evaluate the validity of this specialization. The benefit-cost ratio is estimated at 1.367 under a basic scenario, indicating that the specialization can generate a net benefit. In addition, with a consideration of different kinds of uncertainty in the future, a number of sensitivity analyses are conducted. The results of these sensitivity analyses suggest that the specialization is valid in the sense that all the estimated benefit-cost ratios are above 1.0 in any case. © 2012 Shen et al licensee Springer.

Trust, trustworthiness and cooperation are crucial in achieving social goals, and are thus essential components of social capital. This paper reports the results of a series of lab and artefactual field experiments carried out in Shanghai to evaluate some of the key indicators of social capital in China. The groups selected for the study are middle school and undergraduate university students and community residents. The experiments comprise two public goods games, a gambling game and a trust game. The overall level of trust is negatively related to age, although trusting behavior is also affected by other factors, such as risk-taking. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Both the presence/absence of food additives and provision of accurate information pertaining to the same are considered to be important factors affecting individuals' purchase decisions. In this paper, we apply the choice experiment approach under both real (the laboratory experiment) and hypothetical (the field survey) environments to investigate how consumers value a food additive (sodium nitrite) present in ham sandwiches and whether the provision of information about sodium nitrite affects individuals' choice. The results suggest that in both real and hypothetical situations, participants do not favor the use of sodium nitrite, per se, regardless of whether or not the detailed information is provided. Moreover, the willingness to pay values for ham sandwiches without sodium nitrite are estimated to be lower in the experiment and higher in the survey after negative and positive information is provided, implying that the effect of information provision differs between these two environments. In addition, further investigation of the participants' reasons for choosing ham sandwiches indicates that the information related to flavor seems to have more influence on the consumers' choice behavior in a real situation, while the information associated with health risk is like to play a relatively more important role in a hypothetical situation. In this paper we conducted a hypothetical choice experiment in Shanghai, China, to examine whether the China Energy Efficiency Label influences consumers' choices of air conditioners and refrigerators. A latent class approach was applied to observe both heterogeneities among the respondents and product brands. Our results suggested that consumers in Shanghai were well aware of the China Energy Efficiency Label and tended to pay more attention to products with such labels. In addition, air conditioners and refrigerators affixed with a hypothetical label that indicates saving in electricity bills compared with a standard model received significant preferences, which suggested that the more information manufacturers provide, the more their products would be preferred by consumers. Finally, weighted by class probability, the willingness to pay values for more energy efficient refrigerators were higher than those for more energy efficient air conditioners, implying that Shanghai consumers have greater incentive to pay more for appliances they use more frequently. We consider that transport modal choices are influenced by natural environmental change and transport network improvement. This paper examines how these impacts affect Keywords: individuals' decisions on selecting transport mode under an extension plan for the Osaka Environmental deterioration Monorail Loop-line. To estimate these impacts, we perform a Stated Choice (SC) experiment Network improvement for collecting data in the neighborhood along the monorail's extended line. We estimate our Network externality model with the Heteroskedastic Extreme Value (HEV) specification in order to avoid the Transport modal choice Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA) assumption in the Multinomial Logit (MNL) Heteroskedastic Extreme Value model. Both the results of full-sample and sub-sample data imply that residents prefer model public transport modes (monorail or bus) to private cars when either the natural environment becomes worse or the transport network improves. The necessity of applying cost benefit analysis in evaluating the validity of a public transportation project is well recognized by policy makers in recent days. Originating in this fact, we implement CBA in a new project called Osaka Monorail Saito Line Extension by applying a choice experiment approach. It is estimated that the benefit-cost ratio is 1.87 under a basic scenario. In addition, with a consideration on different kinds of uncertainty in the future, a number of sensitivity analyses are implemented. The results of sensitivity analyses indicate that the possibility of generating net benefit is extremely high for the project studied in this article.

This article applies two recently stated choice survey datasets of Japan to investigate the difference between the Latent Class Model (LCM) and the Mixed Logit Model (MLM) for transport mode choice. A detailed comparison is carried out, focusing on comparing values of time savings, direct choice elasticities, predicted choice probabilities and prediction success indices. Furthermore, a test on nonnested model is also utilized to help determine which model is superior to another one. The results suggest that the LCM performs better than the MLM in both datasets.

Previous studies, which made efforts to explain environmental concern as a function of social structure, suggest that there are traditionally five observations (the age, gender, social class, residence, and political orientation effects) for the relations between socio-demographic characteristics and individual environmental concerns. In this study, we first conduct a factor analysis to a group of 11 environmental concern measures and then use the resulting factors to test three observations (the age, gender, and social class effects) by applying a seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR) model. As a result, high household income and high education level have reacted positively to environmental concern as expected. However, we find that in contrast to most of the previous studies, age has shown positive reaction to individual environmental concern, implying that the older generation is more concerned about the environment than the younger population. In addition, the SUR results indicate that women in Shanghai seem less concerned about the environment than men. Other socio-demographic characteristics such as employment status and household size are found to be almost irrelevant to environmental concern. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Being aware that trade liberalization affects the environment by scale, technique and composition effects, this study uses provincial data from 1993 to 2002 in China to empirically investigate how they affect the environment. Adopting the methodology provided by Antweiler et al. (2001) and slightly modifying their model, this study examines whether the composition effects arising from increasing trade originate due to differences in capital-labour endowment (factor endowment hypothesis) and/or differences in environmental regulations accompanied by income growth (pollution haven hypothesis) in China. The results indicate that the evidence of factor endowment hypothesis is found in most of the pollutants studied in this article, whilst there seems no evidence of pollution haven hypothesis. Combining with all the estimated elasticities of scale and technique effects, composition effects and trade intensity on emissions, I find that increasing international trade has opposite impacts on the environment due to different pollutants. That is, for air pollutants (SO2 and dust fall) increase in trade leads to more emissions, whilst for water pollutants (COD, arsenic and cadmium) trade liberalization decreases emissions.

This article models negative impact on the environment as one of the attributes of transport mode. By this modelling, we are able to examine whether individual environmental consciousness of this impact plays a significant role in his/her choice of transport mode. A survey data from Saito and Onohara Area in Northern Osaka of Japan is used to estimate the model with the Heteroscedastic Extreme Value specification. Both of the estimated and simulated results imply that individual environmental consciousness does influence his/her decision on transport mode choice in the sample. Furthermore, the likelihood ratio tests indicate that both the utility and scale parameters are not equivalent across sub-samples of university commuters, research-facility commuters and residents. The results of the comparison across sub-samples suggest that sometimes we may learn more from sub-dividing a whole sample into several sub-samples if we could distinguish them by their characteristics.

This paper uses Chinese provincial data from 1993 to 2002 to examine the existence of an Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) relationship between per capita income and per capita pollutant emission. Acknowledging the theoretical framework that economic growth and pollution are jointly determined, this paper starts from formulating a simultaneous equations model (SEM) to investigate the relationship between income and pollutant emission. A Hausman test is applied for income exogeneity and a two-stage least squares (2SLS) method is used to estimate the SEM. There are three main differences found between single polynomial equation estimators commonly used in EKC literatures and simultaneous equationa estimators. Since these differences tend to cause different policy implications, therefore, this paper suggests that the simultaneity between income and pollution should be considered before regressing the model in future EKC studies. In addition, this paper also investigates the determinants of income and government pollution abatement expense. Negative impact of pollution on income, and positive effects of physical and labor on income are found in income equation. Whilst positive effects of pollutant emissions, physical capital and the secondary industry share on pollution abatement expenses are also found in abatement equation. (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc.
