Objectives: To assess the quality of classroom-based physical activity intervention that integrated academic
contents (active lesson program: ALP), and to update the effectiveness of the interventions on physical activity, health, or educational outcomes.
Methods: Studies, which published from April 2015 to September 2018, were identified in five electronic data-
bases (ERIC, PubMed, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE). Inclusion criteria were: 1) classroom lesson containing both physical activity and educational contents; 2) physical activity, physical constitution, fitness components, academic achievements, or facilitators-of-learning were evaluated as outcome values; 3) intervention studies featuring randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental design, or pre-post study design; 4) school-aged children (5–18 years) for study participant; 5) at least one week for the intervention period. Physical activity breaks without educational content, the ALP as part of complex interventions, and studies investigating special populations (such as disabled or obese children) were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed using the the Cochrane Collaboration "risk of bias" assessment tool.
Results: All ten studies found increased physical activity following the ALP. Compared with inactive teaching, two studies showed positive effects of the ALP on standardized academic performance test. Four studies found the effectiveness of the ALP on on-task behavior, which is one of the facilitators-of-learning outcomes. Risk of bias was totally high.
Conclusions: Quality of study design has been improving, but the risk of bias is high. Overall, the ALP can increase physical activity level without sacrificing academic performance, but further research is needed to refer to the effectiveness on the health outcome.

Positive association between physical fitness and academic achievement in adolescents has been suggested yet the causal effect of physical fitness on academic achievement remains unclear. This study examined if longitudinal changes in physical fitness were associated with changes in academic achievement among junior high school students. Analyses were based on a two-year with three time-point data of 567 students (aged 12–13 years old at the baseline-point; 303 boys) who entered in five Japanese junior high schools in 2015. Academic achievement was evaluated using the student’s overall grade point average. Comprehensive physical fitness score was summed up from eight fitness tests: 50-m sprint, standing broad jump, repeated side-steps, sit and reach, sit-ups, hand-grip strength, handball throw, and 20-m shuttle run or endurance run. The hybrid regression model was applied to examine the impact of change in physical fitness on change in academic achievement using multiple imputation to account for non-response at follow-up. The changes in fitness score within-person and the differences in average of fitness score of three-time points between-person were associated with change in overall grade point average for boys. No significant association between fitness score and overall grade point average was observed in girls. Opportunities for increased physical fitness may be important to support academic achievement, particularly in junior high school boys.

文教大学, 01 Mar. 2019, 教育学部紀要 = Annual Report of The Faculty of Education, 52 (0), 185 - 197, JapaneseThe main purpose of this study is to clarify the actual lifestyle of junior high school student in Northern Okinawa and associated factors through focusing more on topics of health, study and single parent households. The study investigated a total of 519 students from 2 local junior high schools, comprising of 263 boys and 256 girls from early June 2017 until the middle of July 2017.An analysis of findings indicated that the girls have a better result of sleeping time and daily exercise time compared with Japan as a whole. Analysis also indicates that improvements are required in areas such as breakfast consumption factor, smartphone usage, study time after school and time of boys daily exercise. In addition, the logic regression results indicate that regular life and gender are related to sleep quality. In contrast, academic skill showed differences between boys and girls. However, the association between cram school attendance and the level of academic skill showed the same result for both boys and girls. Moreover, the single parent household resulted in irregular lifestyle behavior such as playing smartphone games too long. Also, in single parent households with boys, the student was less likely to join a sports club. Mental health was also a element for some single parent households with girls. Overall it is confirmed that junior high school students' lifestyle and their academic skill are impacted by socioeconomic factors.

The thinking and decision making abilities evaluation toolkit can be applied on exercise activities ofphysical education (PE) of different outlooks. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to evaluatethe influence of thinking and decision making abilities on motivation in PE class and its antecedent ofbehavior change. The study also aimed to provide physical activity guidance for adolescents. The surveywas conducted in May 2015 among 1,144 students (561 boys and 583 girls) enrolled in public junior highschools in Okinawa, Japan. The questionnaire included thinking and decision making abilities in PE classand "Achievement Motivation in Physical Education Test"(AMPET).However, the pass analysis wasperformed in 842 students (401 boys and 441 girls) with no missing values. The significant positive effectsthe plotted pass outcomes included "learning strategy" against information gathering (β =.32); mutuallearning (β=.45); problem-solving (β=.40); exercise observation and analysis (β=.48); and foundationof learning establish (β=.36), and "overcome obstacles" against problem solving(β=.21); and exerciseobservation and analysis (β=.24).Overall, to foster thinking and decision making abilities, having onlyhigh competence is not sufficient, but well-balanced general motivation is also necessary
1 (1), 17 - 23, JapaneseThe purpose of this study was to examine the effect of stress management program in the exam just before (about 2 weeks until the high school entrance examination). Investigation of the subject was a total of 162 students of the third year that belong to the public junior high school (men 86 students and women 76 students). The results were as follows: (a) The "stress response" indicates a significant decrease in the score, it showed a significant reduction in particular "fatigue" "stiff shoulders" "over-food and drink" among them. (b) There was no significant change for the total score of the "mood". And especially "motivation" and "intensive score" significant changes also was not observed.(c) For a subscale of the mood "tension", it showed a significant increase in scores after the intervention program. In conclusion, the practice of stress management programs of the high school entrance examination just before reduces the possibility of the physical stress response has been suggested. However, there is no change in the mood, especially for tension and increases rather suggesting it is difficult to reduce.

2014This study aimed to cross-sectionally and longitudinally examine the relationship between physical activity, physical fitness and academic achievement among youth in Okinawa. We also reviewed and developed active lesson programs integrating physical activity with academics in the classroom. A cross-sectional study showed that aerobic fitness mediated the relationship between physical activity and academic achievement among junior high school boys. A follow-up study for three years in junior high schools showed that the changes in physical fitness within- and between-person were positively associated with change in overall grade point average for boys. As physical fitness is unlikely to negatively influence academic performance, opportunities for improving physical fitness may generally support academic achievement among junior high school students. Lastly, we reviewed intervention studies on active lesson programs and proposed the programs adapted to the course of study for arithmetic.
