    Rigid flanged shaft couplings are commonly used to connect two shafts that transmit large torque. A pair of flanges is clamped by multiple reamer bolts since they are subjected to large shear force. In JIS B 1451, it is assumed that the shaft torque delivered to shaft couplings is transmitted only through the cylindrical surface of reamer bolt as shear forces, although it is also supported by the friction force on the contact surfaces. In the previous paper, Shear Force Transfer Ratio (SFTR) is defined in order to evaluate the ratio of the shear forces supported by the reamer surface and the action of friction. Then, the distributions of SFTR and the bending stresses along the reamer surface are analyzed by three-dimensional FEM, focusing on the effect of the fit between the cylindrical surface of reamer bolt and the bolt hole. In the actual rigid flanged shaft couplings, it is predicted that the scatter of initial bolt stress among multiple bolts and the misalignment between the two shafts significantly affect the SFTR and the bending stresses to be produced. Commonly observed misalignments are parallel misalignment or offset, axial misalignment or endplay, and angular misalignment. In this study, the effects of the scatter of initial bolt stress and the misalignments listed above are analyzed by three-dimensional FEM, in which an engaged thread portion with complex geometry is replaced by a simple cylinder. By conducting parametric calculations, it is concluded that the bolt force scatter has a minor effect under the commonly encountered tightening conditions, and the angular misalignment specifically affects the load capacity and the bending stresses generated in reamer bolts. It is also found that unlike the other types of misalignments, a harmful influence of angular misalignment cannot be mitigated even if the initial bolt stress is increased.

    Tire coming-off accidents from large vehicles are primarily caused by the fatigue failure of wheel bolts, by which the tire wheels are clamped to the hubs of the shaft. In the previous study, stress amplitudes occurred in wheel bolts were measured using a full-scale test equipment, which was constructed utilizing an actual trailer. In the experiments, the thread ridges of the wheel bolts were partly removed and the portion was machined into cylindrical shape in order to attach strain gauges. To examine the fatigue mechanism in more detail, it is necessary to evaluate the stress amplitudes at thread root, where the fatigue failures of threaded fasteners usually occur. In this study, the stress amplitudes at thread root are analyzed using three-dimensional FEM. Threaded portions are modeled using fine meshes to evaluate the stress amplitudes generated in both wheel bolts and inner nuts with sufficient accuracy. The magnitudes of the live loads, which exert alternating external forces on the wheel bolted joints, are varied so as to cover from the normal condition to the over-loaded ones. It has been found that the maximum stress amplitudes at the threat root significantly increase when the initial clamping force decreases as low as 30% of the prescribed value, which is also exaggerated with larger friction coefficient at contact surfaces around wheel bolted joints. The validity of the numerical analysis is confirmed by comparing the numerical results of the stress amplitudes on the wheel bolt surface with those by experiments.

    Tire coming-off accident of large vehicles has developed into a social problem that threatens the safety of civic life. One of the major causes of the accidents was that the tire tightening operation had usually been conducted by impact wrenches without torque control function. It is strongly recommended since 2003 to use torque wrenches especially designed for wheel bolts of large vehicles. However, it has not yet been achieved to drastically reduce the number of tire-coming off accidents. Most accidents are traced to the fatigue failure of wheel bolts that tighten the tire wheels to the hub. Therefore, it is strongly desired to elucidate the fatigue failure mechanism of wheel bolts. In this paper, stress amplitudes generated in wheel bolts during tire rotation are measured under live load. The test equipment is constructed utilizing an actual trailer. Compression loads exerted on the wheel bolts are varied corresponding to the actual loading capacity of the trailer including the overloading state. The magnitudes of bolt clamping forces are also changed so as to cover from the normal clamping condition to the loosening one where the wheel bolts are tightened with insufficient clamping forces. Experimental results show that insufficient clamping forces, e.g., less than 30% of the normal value, cause high stress amplitudes in wheel bolts.

  • Analytical Expression of True Cross Sectional Area of Screw Thread with the Effects of Root Radius Taken into Consideration

    The cross sectional area of threaded fastener has a complicated configuration due to the helix that characterizes its essential function of tightening structural members. When estimating the strength of threaded fasteners under external loads, the use of "stress area" is recommended in JIS B 0251. It is desired, however, to establish a procedure to calculate the true cross sectional area of screw thread by taking account of the effects of root radius in order to elucidate the various mechanical behaviors of bolted joints. In this paper, an analytical expression is presented to calculate the true cross sectional area with simple algebraic equations. Then, its "equivalent diameter" is denned and compared to effective diameter corresponding to the stress area defined in JIS B 0251.
