    In beam-to-column connections in steel structures, it is crucial for stresses to be transmitted from the beam to column smoothly. However, openings of I-section steel beam web are often made at the end of the beam when piping facilities pass through the beam. Openings at the end of the I-section steel beam reduce its flexural strength, shear strength, and deformation capacity of the steel beam ends. If the openings are made at the end of a beam, the beam should somehow be reinforced to achieve acceptable stress transmission performance and good deformation capacity. There are several existing ways of reinforcing openings at the end of a beam in Japan; however, simpler and more economical reinforcing methods are desired. In this paper, a new reinforcing method of openings at the beam ends is proposed. The proposed reinforcement is a perforated steel plate connected to the beam web using fillet welding. The proposed method is simple, easier to produce, and easier to construct compared to conventional methods. An experiment was conducted to verify the performance of the proposed reinforcing method. The results of the experiments showed that the proposed reinforcing method can be designed conservatively using Kato’s formula.

    Concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns are commonly used in Japan, which utilize onsite full-strength welded splices between columns. However, onsite welding requires high technical skill and a controlled environment. Further, this type of splice is expensive and, in most cases, is not necessary for dependable building performance under severe earthquake loading conditions. Recently, new types of CFST column splices have been developed that enhance constructability and avoid the need for onsite welding. In the proposed column splice method, perforated steel plates are placed on each column half and are welded into place. To evaluate the performance of this splice, it is important to determine the pull-out strength and behavior modes of the perforated steel plates embedded into the CFSTs. In this paper, a pull-out experiment with perforated steel plates embedded into a square CFST stub is conducted. The experimental parameters are the bond between the steel plate and the concrete, the embedded length of the perforation, and the extra length of the steel plate. The effect of the bond and friction strength between the steel and concrete are discussed, and a design formula for the pull-out strength of the perforated steel plate is examined.

    According to the Recommendations for Design and Construction of Concrete Filled Steel Tubular Structures from Architectural Institute of Japan, the allowable short-term flexural strength (ASFS) can be used as the yield strength for the restoring force characteristics model of concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) members. Therefore, it is necessary to examine whether the ASFS can be appropriate as an alternative for the yield strength. Furthermore, as the ASFS is typically calculated using the superposition method, the value of the deformation at the superposed strength cannot be evaluated. To address these issues, in this study, numerical analysis was conducted on the moment–curvature relation of CFST column sections using the finite fiber method. The characteristics of the point of ASFS and evaluation method for flexural yield strength in a broad sense were examined using the slope factor and strength satisfaction factor methods. The corresponding slope factor is larger than the value (1/3) that is generally used for the yield strength definition. Therefore, using the ASFS is as the yield strength of the CFST section is reasonable. Additionally, the formula for the curvature at the ASFS was also proposed.

    Continuous beam-type concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) column connections are simple to fabricate and exhibit effective seismic performance. Fujinaga and Clifton have previously studied the performance of continuous beam-type square CFST beamto- column connections using concrete of relatively high strength (85 MPa) and demonstrated their effective performance and high energy-absorbing capacity. However, in their study, it was found that the local deformation of the steel beam under bending-induced beam tension had a large effect on the steel tube flange near the connection. Further, it was observed that filled concrete may not contribute substantially to the transmission of compressive load at the connection panel if lowstrength concrete is used. In this study, the square CFST beam-to-column connection was investigated, and the connection performance and load transfer mechanisms were examined when the strength of the concrete was relatively low (40 MPa). The specimens demonstrated effective seismic performance, exhibiting sufficient strength and stable hysteretic behavior with high energy absorption even when low-strength concrete was used. Irrespective of the strength of the concrete used, the strain developed in the steel tube flanges was low on the compression side, and the filled concrete contributed to the transmission of the compressive load at the connection panel. The compressive strain in the steel tube was slightly higher when the strength of the concrete was low.

    The seismic responses of a single-story reinforced concrete (RC) frame building model under control using an active mass damper (AMD) are demonstrated through a real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) method. In this study, the RTHS test is carried out by using a hydraulic actuator and a shaking table under synchronization. Most parts of the target RC frame model are provided as an analytical model for an online computer simulation, and only the single column of the first story is prepared as an experimental substructure. A hydraulic actuator deforms the actual RC column, and uncertainty or nonlinearity of the RC column's behavior is focused on in this RTHS test. At the same time, a control device of AMD is actually tested under a situation of installing it on the target building's floor. The floor response of the target building model is generated using a shaking table. A control motion of the AMD is manipulated based on an online simulation of the entire RC building model. Firstly, a time delay compensation of the hydraulic actuator is considered. Time delay parameters are identified using a combination model of a time lag and a first-order delay. A PID controller and a time series compensator are applied to improve actuator performances. Next, the reproducibility of the RTHS test using two-individual actuators is evaluated. The tracking of a restoring force and deformation of the actual RC column specimen generated by the hydraulic actuator and floor motion responses reproduced on the shaking table are investigated. To improve the online numerical simulation based on the measured force responses of the RC column specimen, a high-pass filter (HPF) is applied for a force correction to utilize its phase-lead property. The effect of this HPF force correction is evaluated in both a linear region and a strong nonlinear region of the actual RC column specimen. Finally, the RTHS test results are compared to fully numerical simulations and the control effect of the AMD to increase the damping effect for the target RC building model is also investigated.

    © 2020 by the authors. The structural performance of damaged open-web type of steel encased reinforced concrete (SRC) beam-columns after retrofitting was experimentally investigated. The experimental parameters were the open-web type of the encased steel and the maximum tip displacement of the columns during the initial loading. First, each column was cyclically loaded to the targeted displacement. Subsequently, the test columns were retrofitted and reloaded. The damaged portions of each column were retrofitted with the polymer cement mortar, and the epoxy resin was injected into the cracks. The experimental results indicated that the measured stiffness of the retrofitted columns was lower than the initial ones, while the displacements experienced in each column were different. The lower stiffness might be attributed to deterioration of the concrete rigidity, low rigidity of the resin and imperfect injection of the resin. Numerical analyses were also conducted to evaluate the retrofitted column behavior. The effect of the strain hysteresis of concrete at the first loading was considered for the behavior at the second loading. The analytical results predicted the experimental behaviors fairly well, which implies the validity of the analytical methods presented in this paper for evaluating the structural performance of the retrofitted SRC columns.

    Copyright © 2019 ISEC Press. Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns are used widely as building structure components because of their good performance. It can be complex, however, to connect beams into CFST columns, especially when rigid beam-to-column connections are required. In order to simplify the fabrication requirements and cost of these connections, a continuous beam type connection through the column is proposed. This can develop the full plastic moment capacity of the beam. In this paper, the experiment testing results of two types of CFST beam-to-column connection specimens are presented and the connection performance and load transfer mechanisms are examined. The continuous beam type connection performance is compared to that of traditionally used through-diaphragm type of connection, which is more complex and demanding to fabricate. Both specimens showed good seismic performance, exhibiting stable hysteretic behavior with high energy absorption. The maximum experimental strength exceeded the calculated value. For a continuous beam type specimen, there is the potential for the column flange to be affected by the local deformation from the steel beam under bending induced beam tension. However, such effects were not observed in practice until late in the test after extensive beam plastic action had occurred.

    Copyright © 2015 ISEC Press. In this paper, structural performance of damaged SRC beam-columns with open-web type of batten steel plate after retrofitting was investigated. Three open-web type SRC beam-columns with bolt-connected batten steel plates were fabricated and tested under combined constant axial load and cyclic lateral load. At first, each beam-column was cyclically loaded to the targeted displacement. After the first loading, the test columns were retrofitted and reloaded till large deformation or failure. The damaged portion of each column was retrofitted with the polymer cement mortar and epoxy resin was injected into the cracks. The measured stiffness of retrofitted columns varied between 71.4% and 85.5% of the initial one. And, test results also indicated that the column which experienced the larger displacement and higher axial load showed lower load carrying capacity, but the others showed approximately the same capacities as the initial columns. Numerical analysis was also conducted to explain the retrofitted columns. Analytical results predicted the experimental behavior fairly well, which verifies the validity of the analytical models in low axial load.

    Steering Committee on Steel-Concrete Composite Structure (SCCS), Architectural Institute of Japan, conducted a survey on the damage of Steel Reinforced Concrete (SRC) buildings in Sendai City. The SRC buildings suffered damage to nonstructural members in principle and little damage was observed in structural members. However, some buildings designed by old seismic design codes suffered severe damage to structural members. But they are not such serious damage as story collapse at the middle story of SRC buildings, which were found after the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake. This chapter briefly describes damage to four SRC buildings which showed distinct types of damage. © Springer Japan 2012.

    In order to investigate and clarify the characteristics of the friction damper with variable resistances, a total of four dynamic loading tests were conducted. The primary factors that influence the hystcrcstic properties of the damper were analyzed. The experimental results have indicated that the damper can apply two levels of friction resistance stably. The mechanism for the variance in the stiffness observed while the friction resistance of the damper was shifting from the lower level to the higher one was also discussed. Based on the results of experiments and discussion, an analytical cyclical model which can simulate the test results exactly was proposed.

    Seismic retrofit method by attaching external braced steel frame to existing concrete building has a significant advantage in that the construction can be done without interfering the use of building. For retrofitting the existing RC building by'using the attached external frame, the Japanese Building Disaster Prevention Association has published a design manual. However, the recommendations in the current design manual are not sufficient for low strength concrete and Diamond Type Bracing.

  • Experimental study on seismic retrofit for existing R/C building by using CHS bracing

    A new seismic retrofitting method for existing R/C buildings by using a circular hollow section (CHS) bracing is proposed. In the proposed method, a reinforcing frame composed of an H-section peripheral frame and pin-ended CHS bracings is placed on the outer surface of an R/C frame and connected to the R/C with mechanical anchors and high strength mortar. Experimental studies were carried out to evaluate the reinforcing effect. An FLD (Force Limiting Device(1)), which is restrained not to buckle by the outer tube, is applied mainly as a reinforcing brace. For comparison, single tube braces and H-section braces are also applied to the proposed and conventional method. The proposed connection can transfer the shear force of the brace to the R/C frame. Consequently, the horizontal load carrying capacities of specimens agree with predicted values approximately for the reinforcement of a ductile R/C column. The design efficiency of the reinforcing frame for the brittle R/C column is also discussed.

  • Strength and deformation characteristics of slender SRC beam-column frames

    An experimental study was performed on two SRC (Steel Reinforced Concrete) frame specimens. The specimens were subjected to cyclic horizontal load under a constant vertical load. The buckling length to section depth ratio of column was selected as the experimental parameters. From the test result, measured strength and the AIJ standard strength were compared. The experimental behavior is discussed and the hysteresis model for steel concrete composite members is investigated.

    We proposed a new retrofitting element to externally retrofit existing concrete buildings. The proposed element consists of a monolithic steel column and steel beams at each story level, and looks like a tree. The tree-shaped element is connected to the exterior of the building through studs and anchors distributed only along the length of the beams, and the steel column is free from the existing building.
    Three retrofitted column specimens and four indirect connection specimens were tested. The effectiveness of the proposed retrofitting element and the mechanical properties of the indirect connection were discussed and investigated.

  • DAMAGE TO REINFORCED SPUN CONCRETE PILE AND ITS MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS IN THE HYOGOKEN-NANBU EARTHQUAKE 1995

    Pre-cast reinforced concrete piles used in the foundation of the building that had been damaged by the Hyogoken-nanbu Earthquake were examined. The piles were excavated from the site, and then tested under bending and/or shear loads to evaluate their structural perfomance. The piles had many cracks and damage observed when they were excavated. Some of the cracks might be attribute to the shock wave when the piles were placed by driving hummer, but some seemed to be caused by the earthquake. In this study, structural behavior of a damaged pile is experimentally examined. A static analysis of a pile is also carried considering geologic layer of the site. Then, the cause of the cracks and damage observed is discussed through the static analysis as well as the experimental results so obtained.

  • 66 Ultimate bending strength of concrete filled steel tubular columns with experimental database

    A lot of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns subjected to axial compressive load and bending moment have been tested in Japan. It has become clear that CFT columns have many excellent structural properties, such as high compressive strength, large ductility and large energy absorption capacity. Database for maximum bending strength Mmax are produced on the basis of experimental works which were performed in Japan. Theoretical strength Mpc is calculated assuming full plastic stress distribution. The nondimensional strength Mmax/Mpc are examined and discussed in accordance with several parameters such as width (diameter) - thickness ratio of steel tube, axial load ratio, shear span ratio, strength of material and loading condition.

    本研究は、アクティブ・セミアクティブ制御を用いて、大振幅地震動に対して、人命保護のみならず、建物の損傷を制御し、重要な機能を維持する方法を提案することを目的とする。構造部材(骨組や免震積層ゴム)が非線形化した後の挙動に対してもアクティブ・セミアクティブ制御の効果を検証するために、2つの加振装置によるリアルタイム・ハイブリッドシミュレーション(RTHS)による検証システム(デュアルRTHSシステム)を提案した。研究項目は、1)デュアルRTHSシステムの開発、2)非線形セミアクティブ免震構造の提案、3)大質量比アクティブマスダンパー(大質量比AMD)制振構造の提案である。 これに対し平成30年度は、1)デュアルRTHSシステムを開発し、その動作を確認し、続いて2)非線形セミアクティブ免震構造の提案を行った。 構築したデュアルRTHSとは、コンピュータ(DSP)内の建物モデルに地震動を入力し時刻歴応答解析を行い、得られた免震層の応答変位をアクチュエータで再現し積層ゴムを加振し、振動台で再現しセミアクティブ制御ダンパー(MRダンパー)を加振するものである。このときアクチュエータへは振動台側のコントローラからLANケーブルを通じて指令が送られる。そして積層ゴムの復元力とMRダンパーの減衰力をロードセルでそれぞれ計測し、DSP内建物モデルの運動方程式に代入して応答解析と制御演算を行う。これらの操作は500Hz間隔で繰り返される。 このデュアルRTHSを使用し、積層ゴムがハードニングを生じる非線形領域で応答する免震構造の応答をセミアクティブ制御で低減する実験を行った。その結果、積層ゴムの非線形挙動時において、提案したセミアクティブ制御則によって、線形挙動時と同等またはそれ以上のセミアクティブ制御の効果が得られることが確認できた。

    The structural performance of damaged open-web type of SRC beam-columns with bolt-connected batten steel plates after retrofitting was experimentally investigated. The experimental parameters are axial load ratio, shear span ratio, and the maximum tip displacement of the columns during the initial loading. First, each column was cyclically loaded to the targeted displacement. Subsequently, the test columns were retrofitted and reloaded. The damaged portions of each column were retrofitted with the polymer cement mortar, and the epoxy resin was injected into the cracks. The crack width was measured to assess the relation of crack width and the experienced drift ratio. These are valuable to predict the degree of damage from the crack width after an earthquake. Numerical analyses were also conducted to explain the retrofitted column behavior. The effect of strain hysteresis of concrete at first loading was considered for the behavior at second loading.

    Structural performance of damaged SRC beam-columns with open-web type of batten/lattice plate and RC beam-columns after retrofitting was investigated. Nine open-web type of SRC beam-column specimens and six RC beam-column specimens were tested under combined constant axial load and cyclic lateral load. At first, each column was loaded to the targeted displacement. After the first loading, the test columns were retrofitted and reloaded. The damaged portions of each column were retrofitted with the polymer cement mortar, and the resin of epoxy injected into the cracks. All of the retrofitted columns have shown higher load carrying capacity and lower stiffness, while the experienced displacement in each column was different.

  • Formulation of Load Deflection Relations of Steel Concrete Composite Columns

    The objective of this study is to formulate the load-displacement relationship which can evaluate the local buckling limit, shrinkage limit in case of CFT columns, crack occurrence limit and initial yield limit in case of SRC columns and beams. As to the concrete filled columns, Tsuda investigated relation between experienced lateral drift angle and residual one of concrete filled steel tubular columns. As the results, 1) residual drift angle becomes large as the axial load ratio of the column becomes large, 2)the effect of width-thickness ratio and diameter-thickness ratio on the residual drift angle is not apparent, comparing with the axial load ratio, 3) in specimens with high axial load ratio, the residual drift angle becomes large after the column attained the shrinkage limit. Moreover, accumulated plastic angles are calculated using previously performed test. As the criterion, shrinkage limit, local bucking limit, strength assurance limit are selected, and effect of width-thickness ratio, diameter-thickness ratio and axial load ratio are examined. Fujinaga and Tsuda investigated the relations between cyclic and monotonic behavior on CFT beam-columns by using the previously performed experiment and numeric analysis. While in the small deflection stage, monotonic behavior correspond to envelop curve of cyclic behavior, in the large deflection stage, monotonic behavior correspond to accumulated curve of cyclic one. As to SRC beam, Sakai and Lee performed experimental test, selecting the encased steel ratio and existence of slab as the test parameters. Sakai examined the load deflection relationship.

  • Strength Estimation of Slender SRC Beam-Columns

    In AIJ (Architectural Institute of Japan) design formula for slender steel- concrete composite columns, the modified method of the superposed strength of a column section is adopted with the consideration on the effect of additional bending moment (Pdelta moment). We have already proposed an equation for evaluating the strength of slender concrete columns, and using this, we showed that the strengths of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns and RC columns are well predicted. In this research, with respect to the strength of SRC columns, the end moment -axial force interaction relations are calculated assuming a sine curve deflected shape of the beam-column. In addition to the analytical work, experiment of eccentric compressive load at both end of a column was performed. As the experimental parameters, buckling length- section depth ratio, magnitude of eccentricity are selected. On the basis of the experimental and analytical results, the superposed method for evaluating the maximum strength of slender SRC columns is examined, and proposed.
